Help needed- Northern Virginia housing prices

Guys,
I am doing a report for one of my business classes that details what we hope to do with ourselves after finishing college, right down to the last detail. I decided for the purposes of my report that I would attend college in the DC-metro area where I live now, and move to Northern Virginia out near the Chantilly or Reston area after school. I need to find housing for myself for this report that would be affordable for someone just starting out of college, but I realize Virginia is expensive. Anyone care to help?

TIA
JB

Check out craigslist for local rental prices. You should also be able to find what the ongoing rate is for rentals from various websites like roommates.com or rent.com. These were what I looked at when I was looking for housing in DC over the summer.

Uh, hrm. Depends on what you do, I suppose, and how much you make out of college. I've lived in Chantilly, Fairfax, and now, North Arlington. The rent increases as you close in on the city. You can probably do decently in Chantilly for 1200. Edit: Your acceptable standard of living also plays a large role in this.

They expect you, as a high school student, to know exactly what you will be doing 5-6 years from now??

I agree. Sounds like a pretty stupid assignment. I still don't know lol!

It really is a pretty stupid assignment, IMO. I have plans for later in life but nothing to this detail.

I don't understand this concept of a "job." Don't you all just draw on your family's hereditary fortunes, derived from the thousands of acres you own in the U.K.?

$1200 for rent out in outer NoVA sounds about right. Although many just-out-of-school people in DC seem to live in "group houses." That refered to things run by the prison system and Goodwill where I was from, but that's the term they use.

Wow...this may be a tricky one but here goes.Reston area is currently anywhere
from $1300 and up.Herndon is about $1100 and up.Fairfax zip code 22033 is
about $1200 and up.zip 22030 and 31 is a little less.In these areas you are
about 20 minutes to 30 minutes from Wash. DC and about 5 to 25 minutes from
Dulles Airport. Now actually would probably be the best time to negotiate deals
with owners/landlords because this Northern Virginia market is crazy with some
areas dropping as much as 30 percent in under 2 years. Hope this helps..

A side note..I went to a builder in Leesburg area and they wanted to offer
the model home I was looking at .....350000 less than asking price..Yes I
know it doesn't make sense.1.6 down to 1.25
