Tesco hit CA...

So I hear the British supermarket chain has dipped its toe into the US, several stores opening today in California. What do you west coasters think of 'Fresh'n'Easy'? One woman interviewed on British radio this morning said that to her it felt like a place where people on welfare would shop.

I hope one opens near me. Seems like it might provide a good compliment to Trader Joe's (which doesn't have good produce sections)

I don't really get it because isn't Tescos essentially just an emulation of Target/Wallmart/etc? Seems like the market's already been captured in the U.S.

Didn't Boots or Waitrose (can't recall which) recently make a foray into the American market as well?

I buy local produce and very little packaged stuff. Not only is mass produced food total crap, I have a big problem with Wal-Mart-esque businesses.

There is a big chain on the west coast called WINCO (Washington, Idaho, Nevada, California, Oregon). They have the cheapest prices I've seen, they might even beat Wal-Mart, but the produce is pretty bad quality, though the packaged food prices are tough to beat, and they have a bulk section to buy rice, etc that is pretty cheap.

The only reason I know "Tesco" is because of that Lily Allen song.
