Durable, warm and stylish winter coat?

I basically have bought two winter coat in the last two years and they are both torn to complete crap. I went through a virgin wool Lacoste 'dressier' coat two years ago. So last year I figured out that I would go for something that seems more durable: a Dunderdon J-25 Parka. It is now quite discolored from having my messenger back rubbing against it all the time and the tailor had to do some major work on it.

Of course, its always important to stay stylish too. How do you guys keep a balance between warm and stylish? I mean, what kind of coat do you go for?

I am currently thinking about going for Canada Goose or Arc'teryx. Any other stylish alternatives?

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I will once again suggest Arcteryx. Minimalist, exceptionally well-built, stylish, and last, but not least, utterly capable.

I was in your position a few winters ago: looking for a functional winter coat that was still stylish. I didn't want to fart about with layering, so I was looking for something insulated. Like you, I narrowed it down to Arcteryx and Canada Goose.

After trying on the Canada Goose Ontario Parka, I learned two things: Even the small sizes are way too big and sloppy, and, more importantly, they're more coat then anyone will ever need -- unless you happen to live in Antarctica. They're just too bloody warm; you'll overheat in minutes.

After trying nearly everything Arcteryx has to offer, I ended up choosing this beauty, the Fission LT Hoody:

I have never been more pleased with a clothing purchase in my life. It's virtually weightless, durable, exceptionally warm, and still stylish enough to keep me looking good when in town.

It isn't as puffy as the stock picture may lead you to believe, either. The front comes to just at my crotch and the rear covers my ass.

Nice. How much did you pay for it?

I just returned home from a jaunt to Starbucks for a Venti non-fat Peppermint Mocha. Mmm...

I bought mine locally and paid just under $500 CAD (inclusive of taxes), but it can be had for much less in the US.

I'm also wearing an Arcteryx Emissary Beanie and Arcteryx Delta SV gloves -- also kickass articles.

It does look very nice. I'll take a look at these and the Canada Goose tomorrow. I may end up ordering online though as the US dollar is weak and the canadian prices still high.

Are you sure that Canada Goose would be too warm though? I am in Québec City which is considerably colder than Toronto in the winter.

Thanks!

Even with only a tee on underneath, in -20 Celcius temperatures, I've been toasty while waiting for the streetcar in my Fission LT Hoody.

A note about sizing on my jacket: I'm 6', 155lbs, a 38R jacket, and I find the small fits like a glove. Find a store, try them on, then order online.

Canada Goose stuff is very nice, but I thought it was too much. I was also turned off by the metal reinforcement lining the brim of the hood on the Ontario Parka.

I love Arc'Teryx gear. I've been eyeing a Fission SV for two years now, but couldn't pull the trigger because it's over $500.

Oh.. and how is the sizing on Arc'teryx? I am a 36, in-between S and R. I don't think Arc'teryx does XS so if the sizing is like Canada Goose, it wouldn't be an option..

I've been secretly loving Arc'teryx for years, but afraid to admit so on here. They're the best outdoors gear you can buy. It's what North Face tried to be before they started making "fashion pieces". Even though they're slimmer than most camping apparel, they have a greater range of motion.

As a testiment to they're quality, certain tier 1 units of the military (CAG and DEVGROUP) issue Arc'teryx.

Why were you afraid to admit it on here? Is it stygmatized and I didn't know it?

I just felt like it wasn't "exclusive" enough.

People round here are more likely to covet obscure Norwegian companies because they're: a.) obscure, and b.) Norwegian.

Arcteryx is the best money can buy. Functional, stylish, and quality; their stuff affords you the opportunity to wear technical outerwear and not look like a tree-hugging university student.

Well, Dunderdon and its relative 'exclusivity' hasn't served me very well.

Arc'teryx also makes a lot urban stuff. They also have a very stupid name.
