I'd wager that if the game proves successful in the long term it may end up showing that it's not FPS in themselves that may be turning off certain female gamer, but other factors related to the story, archetypes and imagery at display.

Agreed though didn't they change a couple characters models because of that?  And there is allegedly a ton of Overwatch porn out there.

Character designs can change drastically as a game is developed. When a developer listens to the community and changes character models to be less sexualized then this is very much the sign of a maturing industry. Blizzard did a positive thing that has potential to make the audience for the game more inclusive.

The fact that there is Overwatch porn is completely irrelevant to this discussion. If it's your thing and you look hard enough you can find Simpson, Archie and Final Fantasy porn too. It doesn't matter to this topic as Blizzard and the gaming industry have no control over or a way to stop these things from being made.

I think they changed one character (Tracer) to have some less sexual poses.

But even that was I think driven by a bunch of people who were going off her personality. The problem wasn't oversexualizing ALL characters, it was oversexualizing THIS character.

Got rid of hte pose on the left for the pose on the right, sometime early in the development phase

I think the initial complaint read "It's not fun, its not silly, it has nothing to do with being a fast elite killer...It just reduces Tracer to another bland female sex symbol."

Some people were butthurt and yelling about "WTFBLIZZARD YOU ARE GIVING IN TO THE FEMINIST SJWS FUCK YOU" but it seems pretty clear that it was a character design decision. She's still got a pose that leaves a visible ass, but it is more playful.

They left another character in an almost identical pose:

FWIW though, I was playing Overwatch the other night and there was a girl playing on my team.

She was using the mic, spent time playing both of the characters I posted above, and I didn't see a single person make sexist or chauvinist remarks.

10 years ago if you had a girl on voice chat, there would for sure be some horny teenager who can't contain himself every game.

Yes I know, and I agree with your premise.  We'll see how future FPSs do.

Damn, how am I going to pick up chicks if I can't hit on them while playing video games?

Thanks for the clarification otc. I had not really been following the history of Overwatch's development so my comment was meant to be taken in more general terms.

I was actually responding to brokencycle...just took too long to type it and your post slipped in there.

I think I agree with your comment.

I know someone is reading these exchanges and thinking to themselves "What's wrong with sexy titties and hyper violence in games?! derp derp." That's never been the point. There will always be those types of games on the market and that's perfectly fine. People asking for the Video Game industry to mature are just wanting to see the amount of games that feel "inclusive" in the areas of discussion broaden. It's about increasing the overall market and showing that it can strive to do so much more, not preventing anyone from shooting Hell demons with a BFG.

The cosplayers will make sure there are still sexy titties in games

Mei is a pretty big step forward for women characters in AAA game design. Things are changing, though slowly.

The cosplayers have got that covered too

I went to high school with a girl who went on to be a booth babe (not E3 level), and she's pretty active in the gaming community.  I remember playing games like Warcraft 3 with her in high school and it was hilarious.  She went by a made up first name (which she still uses), and if people she knew in person were playing, she would insist we use her internet name.  These nerds worshiped the ground she walked on.  Total white knight types.  In FFA games, they wouldn't attack her/tacitly ally with her until everyone else was eliminated, etc.  One time, I remember I started calling her by her real name, and all of the white knight types got really pissy with "THAT'S NOT HER NAME!111!!!11"

This was before the prevalence of VOIP too.

About half the people on my XBO friends list (which is admittedly very short) are female. I get the feeling I'm preaching to the choir here, but that makes it even worse to read/hear from the self-righteous "anti-SJW" idiots who mostly weren't even around for the "good old days" when "only men played games" that they lament so much.

On the other hand, I played a few pub Destiny matches against a well-known female streamer a few weeks back, and the behavior was almost exactly as you describe - and this is in an FPS: 3-4 people hunkering down around this girl with shotguns while she sniped - very effectively. Was both painfully obvious and obviously unnecessary. Anyway, strides in the right direction I suppose.

Also, with regards to your earlier comments about getting wrecked by turrets.

It's a bigger problem on console, but it is still true on PC.

One turret is easy enough to deal with, but played Hanamura last night and my team decided to go 6x Torbjorn.

Other team got completely wrecked. They were complaining pretty hard core about it, and we joked back that you just need the right team comp.

Of course in the next round, they decided to to 5x Torbjorn (one guy wouldn't play along). Even knowing they were going to do it, we couldn't beat them. We made a little more progress on the first point than they did, but we simply couldn't keep 6 turrets under control.

I'd still say that our team comp still wasn't ideal, and that we didn't really coordinate well...but we tried to break it and couldn't. The defenders don't need to coordinate at all besides picking Torbjorn. On a map with such an extreme choke point, it hardly matters where they place their turrents. Even if you kill 3 of them, there are still 3 more up (and replacements only take a couple seconds to build).
