Curt Schilling was always a small government conservative, so it's pretty sickening that he would use so much state money to fund his own business then lose it all.

A 38 Studios employee corroborates, pointing out some of what he says are Chafee's most egregious acts of misinformation: Calling a private loan effectively cosigned by the state "taxpayer money" makes it appear that the state has already paid the cost, instead of being responsible for it in the event of failure.

And the highly-publicized million-dollar payment wasn't a loan payment as Chafee claimed, states the employee: "It was actually a weird extra fee to the board he was on, which had nothing to do with payments and interest -- [which was] already handled by setting aside a full third of the loan for that purpose," he adds. "This made it seem like we had somehow burned through all $75 million, including the money set aside to do this."

Good read, thanks for that. It's tough to find any tech news site that isn't foaming at the mouth trying to paint Schilling as a bad guy because they didn't like his politics.

Hooray, someone is excited about it!

My old friend and coworker was disheartened by the largely negative reaction, especially from RockPaperShotgun (what their readership sees in Guild Wars 2, I will never know). Having been through it with SWTOR, I told him to keep his head down and don't worry. Not that SWTOR is in the best of conditions right now...

The whole deal still stinks to high heaven. Without giving too much away, the original Rhode Island deal 38 Studios agreed to would have sank them even if Copernicus had come out.

Plus NO developer from 38 or Big Huge will be dumb enough to criticize their studio, not with that many people looking for jobs. The game's industry is insular as hell. You get even the slightest stink on you and you'll never get a job at a company ever again. It's like a NFL locker room.

I'm really excited about it. My father and I are big ES fans. We've been over each game with a fine tooth comb - no guides. I'm most curious about how sophisticated the social element will be in the game.

Does anybody want to play Ultima Online? shog[1].gif

The only thing bad about MMOs coming out is that they were all conceptualized when WoW was the huge thing, and as a result a lot of them take after WoW's mechanics, which at this point are so trite even in WoW. Unless they can do something to really change up the current MMO formula I can't see it doing all that well, regardless of the Elder Scrolls title.

As for the 38 Studios bungle, at least some people seem to be getting picked up by other studios like Epic.

It'll be interesting to see what the next big MMO is. It'd be cool to see it be from another studio rather than Blizzard's project Titan, but I'm not sure how likely that is.

Have any of you guys tried Tera?

Let's just go back to Ultima Online, please.

It's still up, you can go back

I was banished from the realm ages ago.

IF so, you are a genius among the rabble. UO was the best for trolling.

Apparently, I had an offensively titled horse.
