This has perplexed me for a long time and I've never gotten a good answer, but I hardly ever see an attractive woman working in a coffee shop. Why are barristas unattractive? What is it about that job that attracts below-average looking women?

Barristas are paid low hourly wages. Good looking girls can get jobs as bartenders and waitresses and make a hell of a lot more cash. Ugly girls can't get those jobs, so they wake up at 4am to go open up the local Starbucks and serve disgruntled caffeine addicts.

Ive seen maybe 5 total "cute" barristas at my local joints.

I know a girl that works in a nearby starbucks in a big city and she makes more in tips everyday than a lot of bartenders I know.

It was just a theory. I figure if you compare that barrista in the big city to a bartender in that same big city that the bartender would make more. Again, just a theory. Something the Starbuck's girl gets as a bonus is health insurance though.... which might more than compensate for lack of tips. I'd really hate those early mornings though.

I've definitely seen my fair share of cute barristas in LA and know a few that worked/work now. Overall I'd say I've seen more unattractive bartenders than barristas, with a few exceptions of course (4100, for example).

I've seen attractive girls working in coffee shops, but never in a Starbucks. You always find the cute ones in some indie coffee shop downtown that may or may not cater mostly to Belle and Sebastian fans.

Have you guys not gotten Bikini Espresso stands yet? I like the "themed" ones with "schoolgirl" "naughty nurse" and etc. days. I'd say that there are a proportionately higher number of hot girls working in espresso in Seattle than elsewhere in the country.

When Starbucks swept through Rochester and I came here for college there was nothing but cute bohemian sexychicks staffing the counters. It was great. (At the other coffee shops and the Starbucks I occasionally hit up - we loitered in a Barnes & Noble doing homework)...haven't been to coffee shops much lately.
