We were there in January a year later! Spent Christmas in Rome, New Year's in Appulia, and then flew up to Venezia. Very atmospheric, with acqua alta, the winter light and (relatively) few tourists. Our hotel had provided wellies and hippers, so we splashed through the streets w/ the locals while the tourists were consigned to those tiny raised walkways....
Agreed re restaurant memories and the evening enjoyed. I think part of the problem for us was that my dad had made such big deal about it and gone to the trouble to arrange it w/ many faxes back and forth. We sort of felt we had to go, even though our explorations generally carried us a little further afield. And yes, the local gentry were very much in evidence, along with the obligatory lapdogs who get their own plate of pasta...
