Being that it was off season, the crowd was more local.

We were there in January a year later! Spent Christmas in Rome, New Year's in Appulia, and then flew up to Venezia. Very atmospheric, with acqua alta, the winter light and (relatively) few tourists. Our hotel had provided wellies and hippers, so we splashed through the streets w/ the locals while the tourists were consigned to those tiny raised walkways....

Agreed re restaurant memories and the evening enjoyed. I think part of the problem for us was that my dad had made such big deal about it and gone to the trouble to arrange it w/ many faxes back and forth. We sort of felt we had to go, even though our explorations generally carried us a little further afield. And yes, the local gentry were very much in evidence, along with the obligatory lapdogs who get their own plate of pasta...

I must admit that I love Bruni's writing

There are some pearls in the write up posted above. Also, I don't remember laughing as much when reading a arestaurant review as when I read his review of Kobe Club. That was a true classic

I greatly appreciate the recommendations left here. We spent last week in Manhattan and made reservations at some of these from p.1.
We had the tasting menu at Bouley and Le Bernadin. Both were incredible.
We had the cod, rock shrimp, and a sushi roll for a great lunch at Nobu 57. I think I gained 5 pounds in one week.
