Low-Key Bar in NY

Hi, What is a nice low-key bar in NY to celebrate somebody's birthday? Live music and games are pluses. The music shouldn't be too loud, and people should be able to hear each other. thanks, --trajan

The Nancy Whiskey on West Broadway and 6th Ave in Tribeca is my absolute favorite. It's tiny and has a juke box, but no live music. It has NYC's only "bumper Shuffleboard" table, which is always a good time.

Does that old wasted bartender still work there? If so, your tab might be a lot smaller than you thought....

Last time I was there, yes...but that was over a year ago. NW certainly did provide some of the least expensive tabs I've ever received in NYC.

Live music and a quiet bar do not really go together. You will have to pick one or the other, IMO.

Agreed, however maybe with low-key the OP meant "not pretentious?" If so, might want to check out Rodeo Bar? It has live music in the back and in the front it's quieter near the bar.

The Magician in the LES is great. It's fairly roomy, very social, and a back room that's connected. No games, but a great jukebox and cheap drinks.

Von on Bleecker, just off Bowery does a good job of getting friends drunk. They also have a roomy back room.

Sweet and Vicious is good, too--they have a little backyard, as well.

I like to take my drinks at the Algonquin.

I like revival near Union Square, but no games, and no live music. Generally a relaxed crowd, and when it's nice, a garden.
