Gift help - South Sea pearls, Australia

I'm not sure if this is the right forum but I saw another gift thread on the page so here goes...

My wife's 30th is upcoming. We are Americans living in Sydney for a couple years so I thought I would get her something that would have some connection to Australia. It occurred to me that a South Sea pearl ring or perhaps earrings might be ideal.

Her taste (and mine) tends towards the more simple and elegant. I'm thinking a simple ring with one, white, round Australian South Sea pearl and a white gold band would be perfect.

Can a high quality version of what I've described (perhaps Autore pearls) be had for <A$1,000? Maybe even well under A$1,000? (This forum has ruined me for retail prices although I realize jewelry is a different kettle of fish than clothing.) Any ideas on where to look? Surely Maker's Mark on Castlereagh is not the best place to maximize value on such a purchase, right?

not opals?

I found prices in Australia a little higher than I expected - you can get much better value for pearls in india and hong kong.

I considered opals but just prefer pearls generally.
