Hand made. The sole looks pegged together with bits of wood, as far as I can tell, except for the stacked leather heels which are nailed. They fit about 11.5" long x 4" wide at the ball of the foot.

These are available, but only after I learn as much as I can about them. Because they are so dang cool.

I was thinking old roofing boots when I saw them the other day.

Roofing boots?  I checked - they have no special protection at the toes, and while the soles are nailed, they're not hobnailed (no grip).  I still think they look like cross country ski boots, except the toes just aren't quite long enough.  And I wouldn't know a roofing boot if one kicked me.

This pair....wow. I don't even know where to begin. Narrow at the ankle, laced all the way up the calf, and capable of accommodating quite a large calf even though the foot is pretty small.  The sole looks hand-sewn, except for the stacked leather heels which are nailed. They fit about 11" long x 4" wide at the ball of the foot.

I'm thinking WW I Officer boots, possibly British. I know I've seen them before, I just can't quite remember where.

Actually, they've always been a subsidiary of Panasonic. Panasonic developed the brand specifically for their hi-fi products and the early stuff was badged "Technics by Panasonic".

The more you know...!

Guess it makes sense they eventually made them appear separate, as Panasonic meant "cheap crap" to me and Technics was the opposite.

That said, $4k, still nope.

It wasn't just hanging on the racks, some car dealership bought it in another state. They had it for way more than that on their site. If it were just on the racks, I'd probably would too though just cuz I've never heard of them before that article and wouldn't think it would move, but I'd admire the work for a minute.
