Dress shoe shopping in Paris

I'm in need of a pair of black dress shoes, probably cap toes or something similarly versatile. I was going to go with a pair of Alden or Allen Edmonds, but I'll be in Paris in a few weeks and figured it was worth seeing if there are any worthwhile alternatives in that price range that I should check out while I'm there. My max budget is ~$500 but I'd prefer closer to $350-400 if possible. I was thinking worst case, I might have access to some English or Italian brands that I otherwise wouldn't be able to try on in the USA without paying excessive shipping and return fees. Any suggestions?

Carmina. There is a lovely chap called Frederic in there who can help you get sized.

I'm not a big fan of the French brands in that range: Loding, Finnsbury, Bexley, and Septieme Largeur.

Crockett & Jones might be a good option too as they have 3 locations in Paris:

Personally, I'd hit the La Madeleine location so I could go to La Maison du Whisky on the same trip :) : http://www.whisky.fr/

Looooove maison du whisky. One of the few places in the world that sells the stuff I drink. The markup with C&J in Paris is pretty extreme, though. Reckon we're now over OP's budget, despite the strong exchange rate.

Ok, I was hoping the pricing in Euros would be beneficial, but I didn't realize the markup would be so much. OP could still get sized there though, and then order to the US from Pediwear, Bodileys, Robert Old, Edwards of Manchester, etc. For example, the C&J Connaught is currently sub-$500 (£312.50) from Pediwear:

You can try on Bexley if you are in Paris. There are several branches and individual shoe models seem to vary in fit.

A Stanford whole cut and a Bloomingdale monkstrap. Buy both for further discounts. They are cheap as chips but remarkable quality. Stick a Topy on the sole and you have some sound shoes for next to nothing.

Finsbury is in the 200 euro price range. Okay quality.

Loding is also a pretty good shoe. Leather isn't amazing, I like the lasts.

If you're looking for other alternatives you don't get stateside, those are decent options in the price range.

Westons are fantastic shoes - but those guys are going to cost ya.

Loding is a solid shoe; bought a few pairs when I was in France, but that's like a $200 shoe, so not necessarily what the OP is looking for. Were it me, I'd go for C&J, particularly if it's possible to take advantage of the depressed euro. I know, they're English, but still great shoes. The men's shoe section at Bon Marche is also worth a look. Not super extensive selection, but pretty wide range of brands.

Loding prices run about CAD300-350, so it's within range.

Plus I imagine the OP's intent was to get the best shoe possible while paying the least, and having a budget up to $500. Soooo, I would endavor to say that would have been relevant to consider.

That said, I wouldn't put Lodging in the same quality level as C&J. Certainly not Finsbury. But my point was to give the OP a few more options to consider is all.

Loding prices must have gone up, though I was quoting what I remember paying once VAT came off. They appear to be corrected grain, and they certainly aren't made in France, though I do like that they're goodyear welted. Ultimately they proved a bit narrow on my and I never got around to having them stretched, which I can still do of course.

Yeah I think they've gone up a bit - does help when you don't end up paying VAT. That's criminal.

Agree with your assessment of quality as well, and the toes do tend to be narrow (ditto the Finsburys). Though last time I checked I think a lof their are Blakes stitched? Don't quote me on that though. My memory is as unreliable as my tastes...

I left Paris in January of this year, but shoes were 180 euros. They're all goodyear welted and made in Portugal if my memory isn't going haywire.
