Random fashion thoughts - Part II (A New Hope) - Page 606

I'm talking about the prose, the writing style, and not how each level actually writes but how they are expected to write. The typical prescriptions are clarity, concision, structure, adopting a neutral tone.

idk. maybe faust just needs to read the mla or chicago manual of style and some strunk and white.

I think you're talking about expository writing. Academic writing is (almost) always expository, but not all expository writing has an academic tone. Academic writing is actually often criticized for not being clear or concise.

I think it's pretty simple, actually.

Eugene (Faust) has always preached that he wants SZ to be a special, highly-curated forum. That includes the SZ B&S forums. With Grailed making SZ's B&S forum look like a garage sale, one can understand Eugene's conniption. He can't ban or intimidate Grailed, so he finds other outlets.

I'm sure he does, and as a result his writing has no flair.

I agree, and it implies that most believe academic writing ought to be clear and concise, and hence is taught as such, which is what I assume by the description "academic."

He might not practice it well but he's following their guidelines. My point is that he should use less Strunk & White and more Lanham's "Style: An Anti-textbook." It's important because he's writing about style and his writing has no style. The justification is ethos is essential to persuasion.

i would think the opposite is true (unless you meant a monetary gift and not a gift as in talent) because there are plenty of examples of talentless doofuses making hand over fist and just as many examples of people who spend money lacking any culture or civility and frankly look like barbarians hoarding the spoils of war.

Well it could be as interpreted as you need some sort of angle to make money but to spend it IN A PROPER WAY you need culture.
