Saw an exhibition of Kehinde Wiley's work. Interesting to see Timberland, BBC, and other streetwear brands so prominently and intentionally identified as such as part of the work, a streetwear uniform (not all the painting but some). I wonder if those brands will have any meaning over time for future viewers or if others understood there was a streetwear uniform in Wiley's works....kinda like how Annie Leibovitz's work doesn't hold unless you know that her portraits are celebs.

About a week left for the End of the World Challenge.

@zxcvbn just knocked it out of the park with a really professional looking photo set.

Hope to see a few more entries before it closes. Discussion and commentary welcome too.

Hi Guys,

I really know absolutely nothing about denim, so I wanted to solicit genuine feedback, both positive and negative, about the following purchase. I bought it heavily discounted from a local store. It seems to fit me well. I love the soft feel of the denim. I think I would like it to have pockets for my hands, but that's not a big deal. It is from a brand called Orslow from Japan. What do people think of this brand these days? There was a small thread about them on SF, but there wasn't much there. Is this because people don't like the brand or is it just rather a small player?

Orslow stuff is very solid - pretty popular in Japan, but only limited stock outside. I've been happy with the quality of my purchases.

Am I the only one who is getting carpet bombed with selectism / highsnob mails after they joined forces?

Some days I get 5+ mails from them.

A quick google leads me to believe the important point of reference for Wiley's work is classical portraiture of the powerful, spotted a few Napoleonic generals in there. I mean as long as we understand the gimmick (contemporary young black people painted in a manner referencing classical portraiture) do we really need to know they're wearing BBC or whatever? Keep in mind I am showing off the vast knowledge of his work I gained following a 20 sec image search...

The contemporary western audience will get that it's streetwear, though that understanding may be lost in time -- looking at paintings from the 1800s, I've got about a 5% understanding about what they're wearing there. Beyond that, we've got to examine what clothing means to us now. I know he's often painting people in their own clothes, and so I suppose we could understand what subset of streetwear the subject of the portrait identifies with, sort of a social cue. Is that useful or meaningful if we will never meet that person? Is it that useful even if we do?

My guess is that the parent company, Titel, is not doing so well.  The announcement is couched as a pivot/repositioning, but as you all know, that generally really means "triage".  Online publishing is a pretty cut throat business, and that very trend driven audience is very fickle, and there is a lot of competition for their audience.

Cool is typically a short lived business proposition.  I guess that we'll see.  (fwiw, I know nothing about the audiences and financials of any of these companies.  Unsurprisingly, everyone keeps their cards very close to their chest.)

Excellent brand, and @kiya and I will disagree, but I am not a fan of handwarmer pockets on Type 3 jackets.  I'd like to start a "Japanese denim and workwear brands" thread.  We have a few brand oriented threads, but I feel that right now, it's best to start off with a more general thread, but specific enough to get a critical number of people interested, and then we can branch off from there as needed.

For me it has less do to with putting hand warmers on a Type III and more to do with a jacket without hand pockets is a useless jacket to me. I find it awkward to wear a jacket without a place to put your hands, so when given the chance, like doing the special edition Type III jackets, i put hand pockets on them.
We just released a special edition of a horsehide jacket two weeks ago, our version has hand pockets and a few extra details. I didn't see the point of buying a $1600 jacket that didn't have pockets on the outside, hence the change. Obviously visually it has to work, and both the Type III and the horsehide jacket have both been made with pockets far before Self Edge did them like that.

It's annoying as hell, if they want more business driving people away by spamming them, is probably not the answer.

Yeah, I feel you.  I just feel, at least about handwarmer pockets, the opposite way, especially for Type 3 jackets.  For moto style jackets (that one you did looks really good, btw, though I haven't seen it in person yet), I like handwarmer/hip pockets only if they have a zip.

It's annoying to you, personally.  But it may works, on average.  Or maybe they just haven't segmented you properly.  Or maybe it's a terrible strategy.  I really don't know.
