GQ article on Re/Done -- a brand that's taking old, vintage Levis and tailoring them for more modern fits

http://www.gq.com/story/re-done-vintage-levis-501-jeans-factory-tour

http://shopredone.com/

They also recently did a collaboration with Hanes, where they took old Hanes t-shirts and made them a bit more tailored. The line only seems available for women at the moment, but maybe they'll have a vintage-y, LVC kind of cut in the future for men.

I like the idea of repurposed vintage Levis, but wonder how much value is there in this for guys. I assume the alterations here just involves taking in the leg?

May contact them to get more info.

the only other chop i can think of is to lower the front rise a little bit, but even that's getting into major surgery.

it's funny - the 501 already comes in different tapers. the 80s taper is quite pegged compared to the other iterations. the 90s got a little wider and today's version is basically a redux of the 50s taper with a lot of anti-fit through the seat and thighs. very "dungaree". if you were to find 70s 501s they're usually expensive as that starts to get into legit vintage territory.

incidentally, LVC has been doing these pimped, hacked, hotrodded models for some time OTR, and if you're near a Levi's flagship with a tailor shop inside they'll mod or repair anything levi's. just saying.

Those re/done ones - I think you could buy a cheap vintage pair and have a tailor taper them for a lot less than $267 and get a pretty similar result. It all seems a little too # / instagram heavy too.  My LVC 1978 501s actually have a pretty reasonable taper anyhow, and at 2 years old are actually more interestingly beat than a lot of their vintage pairs (got a hole developing in one knee I'm thinking of doing some kind of DIY sashiko patching on).

Other sliced and diced 501s:

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Soloist is an obvious one

Rather simpler, you have Old Park chopped / tapered 501s

Hexico deformer two-tone 501s

Needles Rebuild dimension jean

Unused

7x7

etc, etc.

In the future we will photograph everything and look at nothing.

Does anybody outside Japan other than Haven, GoodHood and Hypebeast stock Unused? Trying to find size 4's sucks.
Also on the topic I was going to start a "Japanese brands outside of Japan" thread since the nonnative thread never gets traction despite plenty of people on here bring nonnative fans. There's also other, smaller jp designers (Unused, Sunsea, n hoolywood etc) that have a decent amount of interest but not enough to support its own conversation, I think only the visvim and UC threads have been able to maintain themselves.

Your thread sounds like a good idea. The BBJ, Kapital and Needles threads get some interest but it's periodic. Trying to find anything in a 4 from Japanese makers can be a challenge, although a 4 can be anything from 53cm p2p to 60cm+ (I always hope for the latter smile.gif ).

Thanks! I don't know how I forgot about Union.
I searched and theres2 "Japanese brands" threads from 2009, with no posts since 2013, so maybe it's been tried unsuccessfully already.

Some things are products of their time. IMO, threads about Japanese brands could possibly work better now because of the low yen and ease of proxying

There's always the classic C 4est tween_spirit (RIP) thread "official obscure high-end japanese trends youre not cool enough for" which was a favorite of mine. I was actually thinking of reviving it the other day.

I suppose a lot of brands that seemed more esoteric circa 2010 are now better-known and more widely stocked in the West, and people are more clued-up on proxying stuff too. Like, that stuff is less exotic and surprising than it once was? Having said that, care-tags have a great Japanese designers thread going which has unearthed some stuff I hadn't seen before. Would be cool to have some similar convo here on SF.

Re: Unused, I dig it. Don't know of any other western stockists. Its a horribly unoriginal label in many ways - they make a real mish-mash of what's hip (SLP-style jodphur boots, bunch of Soloist pieces they've kinda copied, this season they have a Craig Green-esque jacket, and of course they do unisex/grunge/90s/normcore-y stuff too). But in spite of that, I still find myself liking their iterations of things. Quality is decent too. Its actually sold in Japan with a lifetime guarantee, which I find slightly ironic for a brand that seems concerned with being on-trend. They've done some cool collabs too (with Facetasm, Buzz Rickson, Vans).

Yeah I assume your talking about that "strap jacket" that Unused did? I guess I hadn't really thought of it being a copy-cat style brand but that's probably because most of the western stores only carry the more basic pieces. All I have right now is a waffle shirt and oversized sweatshirt but I've been looking for one of the light wash denim shirts with the half zip.

I was thinking of the 'lace-up' jacket in nylon-poly fabric:

although actually Facetasm has done a bunch of pieces with similar lacing.

Yeah that's the one.

Reminds me of @conceptual 4est's post on the mindset of Japanese designers, and whether the "originalty " criterion can be fairly applied here.
