any tips for de pilling wool? just bought an eg jacket that needs to be de pilled pretty badly. do the little electric things actually work? or is it better just to accept the wabi sabi?

Shave it carefully.

like with a razor?

Use a fabric shaver
no, not a razor or a fabric shaver. that will only ruin you. you need to go to a rural japanese village in kanagawa to find the 15th generation master depilling katana craftsman and learn the art of using a whetstone to sharpen your blade before you are ready to depill your jacket. then, with smooth, quick strokes, you must gently graze but the very topmost layer of the pilled area and remove the pilling millimeter by millimeter.

Try a brush. Some of my knits are also slowly pilling at the elbow. I'm actually curious if a fabric brush will help.

You want to use an electric sweater shaver. There are also sweater stones (like a pumice stone) and combs, but IMO those just cause more pilling cause you're tearing the yarns' fibers.

There are really cheaper shavers on the market, but FME, those work terribly and risk causing a snag, as the blades are kind of dull. The one I bought no longer seems to be made, but I think I paid $15-25 for it. Works pretty well. I would just avoid the $5 ones.

Ooor you can find all the non-pilled sections and rub them vigorously so every inch of cloth is covered with delicious pills, and then it can resemble one of those cool Avant Toi sweaters like so:
