Random fashion thoughts - Part II (A New Hope) - Page 396

RTJ as a crew started in 2012 or whenever R.A.P. Came out (I think they made RTJ1 on that tour) but what I meant was Mike and El have been making music for a long ass time.

You mean together or individually?

Have you seen

Slum Village, Gang Starr and some old Eric&Rakim are about all I can stomach these days. Never been super into hip hop, but when Slum's first came out, I was blown away. Really liked Styles of Beyond for some reason too, but that may have been just weird timing or something...

Separate. Not to go into too much detail but, El-p was in co flow which was mid 90's then they split and el went solo and founded def jux. Mike started in the late 90's with goodie mob and the dungeon family and outlast and that crew and then did some shit with 9th wonder and at some point Mike did a song for Adult Swim which had always used a bunch of the def jux guys for random commercial cuts and fleshed out sings too and iirc the guy that runs adult swim introduced Mike and El and then they decided to make R.A.P., then they toured together (Mike promoting R.A.P. (Which El produced) and El promoting Cancer for Cure), while on tour they made RTJ (or shortly after). Either way, I love RTJ, it's just hard for me to hold much above Funcrusher Plus or I'll Sleep When You're Dead or even FanDam. El-P is basically a personal hero of mine.
I'm actually struggling to think of "new" MC's that I listen to, most of the people I grew up on are still making really, really good music anyway. I like Kendrick just fine but he's not amazing to me, Pac Div are fun and occasionally really dope, SchoolboyQ is cool too. Blu is probably the best, "new" rapper to me, I like him a lot. I Mostly listen to anything El has a hand in and anything Doomtree related, always Pharoahe Monch forever and Grayskul will never get old.
#randomrapthoughts cos apparently it's not ok to post rap in the random music thread.

You mean Styles of Beyond? Takbir quit rap but they still out out "Reseda Beach" (Ryu murders every verse on it fwiw) and Ryu still raps (Demigodz and another thing I forget the name of with Apathy and Scoop Deville) plus he's supposed to have been having a solo album coming for like 5 years (basically since Reseda Beach came out).

I think what I meant by brand whoring is the vicious circle of luxury makers creating stuff for the intention of being a hype item. I realize name dropping labels has been going on forever in hip hop. The early days were pretty funny.  Doug E Fresh lived up the the term "MC". Polo, Bally and green socks, yeah man.

Clean, dry was my body and hair
I threw on my brand new Gucci underwear
For all the girls I might take home
I got the
Johnson's Baby Powder and the Polo cologne
Fresh dressed like a million bucks
Threw on the Bally shoes and the fly green socks
Stepped out my house stopped short, oh no
I went back in, I forgot my Kangol

I still remember those Ecko and Lugz ads in XXL and the source with the Beatnutz and Mobb Deep and whoever. Now it's ASAP with Raf. No real diff. Even Rae was on those Supreme Tee's.

I'd rather listen to Migos than most of the retread East Coast-style "smart" rap bullshit out there. In fact, I do.
Who's migos? And who are the smart east coast rappers (I'm not trying to be a dick or anything I just don't know, I'm curious).
I kind of want to know what's going on now hahah

Yes, Styles of Beyond SOB.. Sorry, on my third GF Sculpin here. I was really into them, back when 2000 Fold just came out. What i meant by timing was, I'd just met my wife... We were living it up.... That and Slum Village were such great party record, and we were hitting it pretty hard back then. Saw SOB live and they were hella' fun. Really dug their vox interplay. Complementary duo.

Doods seemed real cool. Chatted them up after the gig I saw. Really dug how they rapped about being broke-ass, instead of this fake $$$$ shite. Back then it was pretty unique. Solid flow.

@willy cheesesteak yeeeesssss. That's awesome, all of that stuff.

I just want to post like 50 youtube links now.

oh yeah, Nacho Picasso is also a dope "new" (ish) MC. But he's kind of in that same realm with Grayskul and Oldominion and those north west guys so maybe cheating a little.
