Narrow grip bench presses? - Page 3

i think we're just going to have to agree to disagree.

while i agree that a lot of T-Nation readers belong to a group of people chasing after a certain physique, i find the authors very knowledgeable and cater to a very wide audience. i'm not one of those chasing that certain physique, i'm trying to lose weight and gain some mobility and explosiveness for my weekend ball games. i know on the surface, T-Nation just looks like a place for roid junkies to hang out online, but there's a lot more depth to it than you think.

as far as the exercise i recommended, again it's not perfect (but what exercise really is?) but you don't sacrifice much ROM (your elbow still breaks the parallel plane) and you keep your muscles tense throughout the lift so i still believe it's a exercise worth implementing in your workout routine. ROM is great, but it's not always king.

also i never said anything about isolating inner chest muscles and building them up, that's what your interpretation. there is no way a bench press of any form can be an isolation exercise, it is a compound exercise. by keeping the DBs pressed together, you just recruit the inner muscle more and keep it tense throughout the lift. but the main point is still (as pointed out by someone earlier in the thread) if you want a big inner chest, work on your chest so you have bigger chest muscles; that's what i believe as well. i just recommended that exercise for variety (over the standard bench press) and because i believe it's a good exercise despite the slight reduction in ROM.

again, we'll just have to agree to disagree.

Ya, we will. T-nation isn't a work friendly site or else I probably would have looked more into it. I'm busy at night

Close grips presses? Essential to develop the triceps to give that last "umph!" on lockout.

Actually, 0% of muscle building takes place in the 'negative' phase of the lift... when you lift weights, you are tearing muscles down to regrow back later. You cannot grow your muscles during lifting.

Also, there is no 'inner' chest... take a look at a human anatomy chart and you will see that no such muscle exists. If a trainer ever tells you about working your inner chest, it's time to find a new one.

Instead of asking on this forum, you may want to try elitefts.com, t-nation.com (already discussed), or westsidebarbell.com. All very good sites.
