FYI - Great deal on IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad notebooks

Finally ordered a Thinkpad T61p to replace my ancient 10lb. Dell superbrick. They're having a 25% off sale and then I found a code on Fatwallet for 10% extra off.

Here are the Thinkpads. You guys might especially appreciate the new "Reserve Edition" with a hand sewn leather cover. I always wondered why they didn't offer something like that. Starting at only $5000.

The ecoupon code for 10% off is USPSAVE13RT. All caps.

No idea how long this sale is supposed to go for, so if you've been thinking about it for a while, you'd best jump on the deal. Hope someone finds this helpful. P.s. the sale and code together saved me about $600.

Hope you've been checking out slickdeals.net. There're some great Thinkpad deals on there right now.

I haven't, but I don't see any that don't say expired. The latest ones on there look about the same as what Igot.

There are deals threads for shoes and ebay clothing in Buying & Selling, and there is a Sale Alert Thread in Streetwear. Also the notorious NYC sale alert in Men's.

I really like my T61 (non-p). I've had it for around 4 months now, but unfortunately for me, it is still a bit too cutting edge to function at 100% in Linux. Maybe some day...

The reason why I say that because I've seen two recent deals on slickdeals where there were 25% plus another 20% off. They appears quite regularly, even though they expire fairly quickly.

Not sure I understand what this means.

Yeah, the ones I've seen for the extra 20% were for the X series and tablets or something. As far as I've seen this is about as good as it gets for the T series, though I hadn't seen this deal before. I guess I should hang out on the deals sites more, but it's too tempting.

Estimated ship date: Nov. 27.

You'll like it. I've had a T42 for a while now and absolutely love it. It had a 3 year in home service agreement when I bought it slightly used from fleabay. It was sold from a business liquidation, I believe, and the owner failed to mention the service contract ($200 value). Since then, I've had two screens, one AC adapter, and one external case, and one motherboard replaced no questions asked. Most of the problems were minor, but I was annoyed by them so I had them replaced. IBM, even after the sale to Lenovo, still provides exceptional service. I wouldn't hesitate on another Thinkpad in the future. My T42 is still in pretty good shape, by the price for the X series has gotten low enough to make them really tempting.

Nice. I think I added the 2year onsite plan to mine. I figured most stuff would break within that window, and that way I wouldn't have to be without it for more than a day or so. And since I was getting the % off, I figured I could afford to throw that in there. Really didn't expect to get out of buying a laptop for under $2.5k, but the total was only $1800ish after tax! Obviously I didn't jack the configuration, but it will still be like twice as fast/badass as my desktop is now, except for the video and storage space. BTW, did you notice they now offer a 200GB 7200RPM hard drive with full disk encryption? (FDE is a bit scary actually, but cool) 200GB @ 7200 rpm in a 2.5" disk. That's crazy. When I was a kid... But if I decide I need that much, I'll buy the ultrabay adaptor and pick one up in a few months when they are $100 or so.

I recently set up a couple of Thinkpad tablets for clients and was very impressed. They're really the only notebook brand I can think of where the consensus is that you basically can't go wrong.

Anyone know where to find a leather cover like that? It looks nice and sure beats generic silverish plastic.

I'm pretty sure you'd have to have it custom made to fit the model. It has to have holes and such for all the ports, the battery, etc. I'm thinking about getting some leather and gluing panels of it on to my new laptop when I get it. On my last one, I took a couple of leather samples I had from couch shopping at DWR and put them where my wrists sat, and it was nice to keep it from getting sweaty on hot days.

Asus also has a couple of leather covered models, the S6F and W6F:

Also found while looking into this, check out this steampunk laptop:

Yeah, that's pretty cool. Another feature that I haven't had to use yet, thank god, is the drop sensor. When the laptop senses that it's being dropped, it shuts down the drive and "braces" itself for the impact (I'm not sure what the technical term is). This prevents further damage to the drive and data.

I read a story somewhere about a soldier in Iraq who had his titanium screen cover laptop take the bullet for him. It shows a dent in the cover.

Whoa. I have a couple of old laptops I'd be willing to attach some leather to. I don't think I'd do it to a new one for the first time..
