Depending on the fit, I match my cardigans sometimes with an American Apparel thermal henley: http://store.americanapparel.ca/t457.html or a basic v-neck http://store.americanapparel.ca/2456.html

White or gray heather v-neck tees are my usual choices. American Apparel and J. Crew have the best IMO.

I like how the pennsy cardigan looks over the jean jacket in the Engineered Garments lookbook, but I reckon you need a large cardigan and small jean jacket for that to work.

Keep it simple, a nice tee or button-up will do.
If you're doing the young hipster thing with the cardigan being really slim and fitted then something like a stripped v-neck tee will do fine.
The fact that it's a cardigan is unique enough, no need to throw in anything too busy.
