Yeah I think that for the most part you would either have to be using a very high end system OR be actively listening for discrepancies when listening to MP3s above 192. Music is music!

I use WMA-lossless. The files are about half the size of the uncompressed .wav files from the CD, so an album takes ~300MB. With the size of today's hard drives, there's no reason to compress. I don't use an ipod, but for the short time i used an mp3 player i maintained a second copy of my most popular music in 160vbr.

I just got the new 160 gig iPod Classic, its perfect if you are going to have very large music files.

I use the Apple Lossless Encoder in iTunes (.m4a extension) when I rip my cds.
