What a Belgian can do with a little ingenuity

My staircasemate came up with this one night. It's sort of a scavenged/low-rent croque monsieur.

The Grilled Alex

1.In a large frying pan on medium-high/high heat, melt a pat of butter in one side of the pan. Stick a piece of wheat bread on it to cook.

2.Take several pieces of smoked ham sandwich meat (thin sliced) and throw them on to fry up. Take a handful of grated cheese (we use cheddar) and put it in a spot on the pan that hopefully you left.

3. Turn the bread and ham as they brown. Remove when both sides are cooked to your liking

4. Cooking the cheese is sort of like making an omlette. You want to get it browned on one side and kind of work it on the pan so that it all cooks up into a semi-homogenous mass

5.Asseble the Alex: bread, ham, sliced tomatoes, and the cooked cheese on top

The cheese gets slightly crispy very quickly as it cools and makes the whole thing awesome. Ingenuity kids- that's what it takes to survive at college.

That actually sounds good....and you mentioned an omelette and I thought "that might actually be pretty good with an egg added in", kind of like an open face BEG w/ ham instead. Oh the possibilities......

Adding just a little bit of Worcestershire sauce to the cheese when it's cooking also adds another nice flavor note. I've made a sandwich very similar to yours cooking it all with the broil setting in my oven. Culinary experimentation is awesome!
