I want to send a female friend a gift with the theme of a box or container.

Some ideas so far are:

A music box
A locket

Any other ideas?

Wouldn't it have been easier to make a joke about "box" than "container"?

Bastard! I just got that damn song out of my head around two weeks ago.

Actually, the box theme came from something she said...that she would keep some old memories of us safely locked away in a box, metaphorically.

I wanted to follow up with something "box"ish as a gift. Something that she could have to remember me by...it is very likely we will never see each other again.

I'm a big fan of precious metal boxes. There are lots of old, vintage boxes made out of sterling, gold, etc. that are very lovely and not necessarily costly probably because they were intended for outdated things like cigarettes and snuff.

That is a nice idea, LK. I like the antique element. The cigarette box won't work...I was a smoker...she is an adamant non-smoker. But something that isn't apparent as tobacciana would be interesting. Could you post an example of a nice snuff box?

I don't know how large you want the box to be, but snuff boxes are usually rather small.

However, there were also table-top snuff boxes that are larger as well as old table-top cigarette boxes like this one:

I think small is good. I just took a look over at eBay under "snuff boxes" and found some lovely things. Nice idea, thanks!

Also, I like the Japanese laquerware idea.

R&Y Augousti make amazing boxes out of stingray, mother of pearl, parchment and other nice things.

... Probably hard to cut a hole in though.

I looked at some of the Augousti things and they were made in Thailand which is deceptive given the French name.

Also, there was a certain lightness that resembled cheapness in their shagreen frames, etc. Certainly lacked the quality evident in inter-war English shagreen goods.

Then seek out Jacques Robin of Cuirs d'Ocean...

One of the more interesting things I recently saw was this shagreen box with a lid inlaid with numerous animal artifacts in a sunburst pattern: crocodile skin, ivory and tortoise-shell. It was a veritable box of paradise.
