Lol! I thought about that a few weeks ago. Maybe there should be some probationary settings placed on new accounts if there's none yet. They can't start new threads for a week or two and posts are limited per day. Or maybe they can only start new threads once they reach a number of posts and they shouldn't be nonsensical.

I know it's a difficult job from moderating on other boards, just offering my spam killing services to help out.

Problem is not enough EU>Far East mods (GMT+1-7). I offered myself, didn't hear anything back. :eh:

I'm assuming there are more than enough members that volunteered. Probably they already have a lot to do but they can at least assign one or two to handle the spam during those hours. It will help lessen their work when they wake up.

Seriously these type of rules should be easy to implement.

The best solution is to institute a waiting period of few days or week before new thread can be started. This would greatly reduce number of new post (what shoes should I buy?) There is is dedicated thread for posting new questions.

This would effectively ensure that the site dies, since there is natural attrition for all websites, and we are always on the lookout for new members with something to offer, and/or want to grow on and with the site.

On the other hand, seriously considering adding a mod on a probationary basis.

It is about quality not quantity. Here is a four new threads from the home page I picked up just now.

http://www.styleforum.net/t/476009/question-about-cleaning-shoes

http://www.styleforum.net/t/476007/formal-evening-but-not-the-office-or-black-tie

http://www.styleforum.net/t/476001/buying-suits-online

Most of us existing members assume that these are trolls, in fact I check the post count of the member who posted the new thread before I even read the thread. If I see low post count I ignore the thread completely.

That's why hardly participate on any threads save for those that I have been subscribed too.

I too would like to see more members join these forum (after all I am selling staff here too) but I would rather see quality not quantity.

It's not as simple as "quality over quantity". It's a numbers game combined with the fact that forum software is pretty old at this point, and not easy to navigate compared to newer technologies, and that fact that the guys most technologically literate might not be be the most knowledgeable about clothing, and vice versa.

The solution, that has been shown on other forums, and on very successful platforms like reddit, seems to be to have more boots on the ground. Right now, @Murlsquirl has been given the task of welcoming all noobs, and corralling threads that are really "quick questions" into a special thread for new users. He has been doing a great job, but if you guys can all help noobs navigate the forum, that creates the next generation of good members, and we all benefit.

Incidentally, you guys don't know what is a real troll, or have forgotten. Most new members are not trolls, just green. A question about black tie, or how to clean shoes, or how to buy a suit online, are all legitimate questions. Just because you've read it 10000000 times (and as a guy who has been on here since March 2002, I can guarantee that I've read and answered these questions as much as anyone) doesn't mean that it's not new to someone else. I don't if any of you do martial arts, but I have been practicing and competing since I was a teenager (I am 40 now, and "retired".) I can throw combinations pretty much in my sleep, and my front kick and side kick come as easily to me as using my hands. I can throw an armbar literally with my eyes closed (and often practice that way), because I can feel where an opponent's body is going to be. However, when I teach students, I certainly don't expect that they would know anything other than that they want to learn.

tru dat on Murls.

Fok,
I totally agree. But my perception is a number of new members are just plain lazy. I use to help them navigate by suggesting the search function, as we all should if possible. I would even do the search and post links to older/similar threads. But I got tired. Most of these noobs wants instant answers asap, without having the experience of doing some legwork and taking advantage of forum
functions.

When I'm in a good mood, I still post of older discussions when responding to new threads. :D
