USPS Shipping Charges from US to UK

Hi all, please forgive me if i've posted in the wrong forum. However, as someone who has started to purchase a few items from the US, I'd like some tips on what would be typical shipping charges to the US.

I understand that some dollars should be offset for packaging. However, roughly how much should it cost to send any of the following:

1 shirt
3 shirts
6 shirts
1 suit
2 suits
1 pair of shoes

If any members deciding the offer assistance could quote for USPS Priority International AND USPS Express International, I would be grateful.

You can access USPS rates at this link: http://www.usps.com/ Cost will vary as do the weights of individual items, but you can get a rough idea.

I'm sorry to resurect this old thread, but I do need some more advice. I've had 2 quotes for shipping a suit via USPS Express International mail from the US to the UK. In the first case (via eBay) I was quoted $27 (which is a little low), but I presume the seller had the right amount as they used the shipping calculator. When I enquired about the tracking number, I was told that when they went to the Post Office, the actual charge was $15 more and so they "decided" so ship it via another means (I'm presuming Priority International as they provided a tracking number). In the second case (via Style Forum) I was initially quoted $40 for a suit. When I enquired about the tracking number the Seller claimed that it would cost close to $100 to ship via Express International. Hence they "decided" to ship it via another means (this time without any tracking number). There may be a 3rd case, but I'm waiting for the Seller to reply (yes, i'm chasing for a tracking number). Please note that this has all happened THIS week. Should I just suck it up? I am quite a fussy Buyer and Seller and I am particularly concerned about shipping. I don't like having items that i've paid for in transit for too long so I usually ask for Express International. Can anyone suggest any way that I safeguard against such things? Yes, Express International is expensive. HOWEVER, in either case the seller didn't got back to me with a revised quote. They just went ahead and shipped and then didn't mention anything until I asked. I must admit that this doesn't happen often, but potentially 3 in one week is starting to become a pattern. Here's what the shipping calculator gives for a 3lb package

The price increases/decreases by ~$4.5 for every extra/fewer pound.

For the 2nd case, the seller most likely used First Class International as Priority does have tracking, and UPS or FedEx is not an option for <$40. This is unfortunate, as First Class International, when purchased w/o Registered Mail, beside being a bit slower, provides neither tracking nor indemnity/insurance.
Anyway, the difference between what you paid and actual postage is probably ~$10. Not much, but you still should ask for a partial refund, on principle.

Thank you for your prompt reply. The guide that you gave me is really helpful.

Because of the strength of the UK £, the price difference between Priority International and Express is significant, it is not that greater difference for me.

My question really is regarding any mechanisms that I could use to safeguard Seller sending items out using their discretion, rather than the agreed method.

Other than that, Sellers tend to add a few dollars for materials. However, the prices do seem to vary between them.

the PZ Sartoriale jacket that I sent to you cost a little under $40 to ship Express Mail international if that helps
the difference between express and priority is pretty minimal from the shipper's end and USPS quotes about 5 days quicker

Thanks drducky, I've had around 30 shipments from the US in the last year and they've all been around the $40. I had 2 suits, 6 shirts and 3 ties shipped for $70 via Express International.

I just don't get it. I don't feel that it's appropriate to dictate prices to Sellers, but I don't know what else to do.

Is it simply a question of explaining in great detail what I require and then appearing to be a jerk?

I don't know.
