Anyone?

I spent a while living in Japan a few years ago but I neglected to fully explore Sake, opting instead for sho-chu and the glorious beers that were available. Just recently I've become intrigued by the idea of picking some up, but I have no idea what to buy or really how to prepare it, so any information or suggestions would be great, cheers.

+1. Very nice choice. Generally, Sake from this region of Hyogo (Kobe) is rather nice.

Just like wine, you don`t really go by the BRAND so much.

You have to learn the different TYPES of sake, and it would be good to know the different rice growing regions too. Once you got those down pat, you don`t really have to worry about the brand, as the type and region will give you a pretty good idea of the taste.

Types are like:

Ginjo
Jyunmai Ginjo
Daiginjyo
Jyunmai Daiginjyo (this is considered the top of the line type, and usually the most expensive)

Kobe??? Come on, you know Niigata has the best sake!!! (j/k) Of course, I'll admit I'm baised... I spend my summers there. But, you don't get much better than Kubota Manzyuu. Anyway, sorry for chiming in late on this one... I just stumbled across it and thought I'd add my two cents and appreciation for Niigata sake.

Yes! You get to keep your decent beef and that's it (Matsuzaka beats you there, too!) Sake, rice, and good water are the domain of Niigata and that's that.

But of course! There's not much else to do when it snows 15 feet in wintertime...
