I loved the security in Rome (Fiumicino), there wasn't any...until of course I hit the El Al counter, and then the questions began, followed of course by the enema...but I guess it's the price one pays for flying the safest airline in the world.

How about wearing Barney Stinson suit pajamas

Most of my travel is long-distance. The shortest flights I take are from the Northeast to California, but many have been 24+ hours of travel. Wearing a suit is simply unreasonable. I've heard of many going through security in a suit and changing in the bathroom, for the reasons state on the first page of this thread.

Personally, I normally wear nice slacks and often layers such as a sweater over a dress shirt.  I may also do a t-shirt and a blazer. If I get hot, I can remove a layer, if the plane is cold, I can keep the jacket and/or sweater on.

I never wear jeans, not only because the airline personnel are more likely to treat you well if you're dressed nicely, but because jeans are very *thick* and are actually less comfortable on a plane where there is limited mobility and leg room.

I usually wear this for long haul flights, first or business class:

Italian jeans with a little lycra in them (not too tight but the lycra makes them very comfy)
A V-neck wool/cashmere sweater
Sportcoat w/ pocket square.
Loafers (with socks)

This ensemble has many advantages:

1.) Looks sharp enough without looking over dressed (I very rarely see coat and tie on long haul flights).
2.) Sweater covers waistband of jeans - no belt required (they are a hassle at security).
3.) Loafers come on and off at security easily. If it's cold out I might sub out for a short boot without laces.
4.) The sportcoat adds a little dash and the breast pocket is the perfect place for ticket/passport/ etc. etc.

The flight attendant hangs the sportcoat. You can sleep in the jeans and sweater and not a wrinkle shows. You look just as good when you arrive as when you left. I'm just not fussy enough nor ghey enough to change into those silly airline pyjamas. That just gives me the creeps.

If I am flying overnight to a meeting that morning (God forbid) I change at the airport first or business class lounge.

Flying short haul during the business day it's pretty much suit and tie if there's a meeting upon landing. I always fly first class so the flight attendant takes care of the jacket. I will wear loafers with a suit sometimes in this circumstance. Even though it's improper.

I normally wear a nice pair of jeans and a button up shirt, maybe a light weight blazer depending on destination and the length of the flight. Even when going on vacation to the Caribbean, I like to wear a nice pair of pants, a linen shirt and loafers. The only time I didn't look nice was on a 9 hour red eye from Anchorage Alaska to Washington DC. I wore a pair of Adidas track pants and polo shirt.

I travel a lot back and forth to Italy from NJ, kind of have my flying outfit down to a controlled entity now. Slim Denim, untucked button-up sport shirt, and my most comfortable pair of beater Allen Edmonds bluchers. Still look better than most people out there, but I stay comfortable on the long flight. I think the key is comfortable shoes. Serves me well.
