enough so that it feels right on your waist.

Enough to stylishly tuck my gun into them.... Its one of those things were you know it when you feel it, I would say.

as tight as possible.....hate tightening my belt and having the wait bunch up...

i also hate the belt + bunching up effect. however i leave about a finger width of space so that it's possible for me to breathe, especially after eating large meals.

I like the muffin top look so I go for negative 3".

What about the crotch area? Do you leave enough room for an unexpected stiffy?

I like my suspender pants pretty loose.

I have an extra pleat made into my bespoke drawers. To accomodate my monstrous stiffy.

to the OP, it should be tight enough where a belt is never necessary to hold your pants up, loose enough so that it's comfortable.

+1 The belt is pretty much just for decoration.

This is how I've always measured well-fitting pants: that they should sit snug, but comfortable, and remain on the wearer's waist/hips without the aid of a belt.

Ditto here. You can get away with larger waisted trousers with braces. To me, they are so much more comfortable.

if the waistband folds up under the belt, its too large.
