I've never bought from an ebay foreign seller before but am considering a pair of Fiorentini+Bakers from Italy. Can someone explain to me how, when, where etc. the Government may get their hands into my pocket?

Say they are antiques over 100 yrs. old

Depends how it is sent.

If it is by FEDEX or DHL, just bend over and clench your teeth on something.

If it is by the postal service and a low value/gift is declared, you'll probably get by with paying nothing.

Receiver pays all applicable duties and taxes, yes? Shipper pays nothing?

Depends on how you set it up. You could negotiate that receipt of goods does not occur until the buyer physically takes possession. Then the shipper bears risk of loss and would pay duties, etc.

The auctioneer doesn't do anything but ship it via UPS with insurance if chosen. (Understandable). Anyone want to take a stab at import duties on $175 shoes?

I think no import duty/tariff b/c Italy has MFN status (I believe)

I'd expect to pay 20% and be pleasantly surprised if it was less.

Do the shoes fit into this category: Footwear w/outer soles of leather & uppers of leather, not covering ankle, made on a base or platform of wood, w/o insole or metal toe-cap; if so, I believe they fall under HTS number 64035910 and there is no import duty; if Italy does not have MFN trade status -but I think they do- then 33.3%
