Loft Living- Pros:Cons

So I'm going to be moving into a loft in the oncoming months. I'm upgrading, but I wondered if anyone had any pros or cons to loft living. I'm really excited about downtown living, but i need to know what I'm in for.

My sister did this for a number of years. It will be cold, very cold.

I'd like ling in a loft at some point. The advantage is that you'll have a lot of room to store your things. The down side is, as stated, the high cost of heating the place. Nevertheless, you can wear more clothing. I'd enjoy living in a loft.

What city? Purchase or rent? If it's one big open space, I hope you're a neatnik. There's no place to hide.

I guess you'll need some dividers and do some good interior design to make spaces. I've wondered about the noise factor because a lot of loft type buildings are above bars.

I'm moving to Chattanooga, TN. They are going through a massive gentrification right now, and I'm getting in before every property is bought up. It's all open, pretty much gutted. I've considered building some "moveable" walls, not screens, to close in areas, or open them up for art gallery showings.

I prefer it to be colder, so i suppose the heating won't be to much of a hassle. Does anyone know of any websites geared for loft living? I appreciate the input about interior design. I definently need to stay up on the cleaning. But since it's a "raw" loft, I can put a storage closet wherever I'd like.

Heating/cooling, ventilation and noise are some issues.

How big is the loft?

A decade ago I lived in a big industrial building. There were 4 of us on one floor of about 2400 sq ft. I could rehearse a show in my living room; when we moved into the theater [OOB] the stage was smaller].

Downside was no heat on weekends.

I live in a loft in Fort Lauderdale. Heating and cooling is not an issue for me. Interior noise is the biggest issue. My wife hates it when I wake up extra early and start the coffee machine (with build in burr grinder). Also, I constantly like to keep things tidy since it is wide open.

My concern would be who /what is around you.
I want to be in one also. OKC is now doing some nice things with loft spaces. My issue would be noise. Or if you are above a business, what potential problems that could create.
The idea of movable walls would allow alot of flexibility for you.
Post some pics on SF Cribs thread.

Don't assume it's a good investment, it's still more like a condo than a single family home. Intown living is not as alluring in smaller cities where affordable homes are less than 5-10 miles from the center of the city. You could lose money unless you're willing to wait out the ups and downs of the real estate market.

We live in a loft. God dam it, no doors to slam! I also have to tip toe through the tulips when I wake up in the morning. I have to grind the beans in the bathroom with a towel over the grinder.
We moved from a five bedroom Victorian with small dark rooms and now have a huge open space with towering windows. Love loft living!
