Burberry trench coat sizing

I'm currently scouring the internet for a Burberry trench coat. My jacket size is 40L (or 40XL, depends a bit on the brand -- I need the sleeves to be around 27-27.5 inches). I started out looking for Burberry trech coats in this size, but having paid a visit to the Burberry website I now believe that this may be a big mistkake

. The sizing guide on the website seems to suggest that I should go for a size 52 (52L, presumably -- not sure how long the sleeves are on these coats):

Have I understood this correctly? And am I right in understanding that the sizing up is necessary to allow for the possibility of wearing a suit under the coat? Thanks a lot in advance for your help!

I really wouldn't buy any RTW overcoat without trying it on first. Most overcoat sizing is supposed to be the size of your suit jacket and they make allowances for having a suit coat underneath it. However, some are still too big. The last one I bought was actually a size SMALLER than the suit jacket I wear (if you can believe that). I wear a 42 jacket, but bought a 40 overcoat because it fit better even with a suit coat underneath.

I would go to the store and try one on for size. Once you have figured all that out, go back on-line and buy one.

Thanks guys, try one on I will then. Unfortunately I'm in the wild North West not London, but I've just found out that there's a store in Manchester

I wear 38L-40L jackets (Euro 50L = US 39L fits me best), depending on the manufacturer. I bought a 40L Burberry trench last year from their Cabazon outlet store after trying it on over a blazer. I think you should go with your normal jacket measurement. IMO, Burberry sizes their trench coats to go over jackets of the same size. Of course, it's best if you can try them on.

I wear a 44xl in jackets, but my custom burberry was made in size 42 - fits nicely over my suit jacket.

Replace 'Cabazon with 'eBay' and this paragraph would describe me perfectly.
Go with your jacket size.
Check eBay regularly.

I second this opinion (I'm also a size 44) and even the 42 seems big, at least in the double breasted version (could that be the reason why?)

so much so that I'm going to be listing one on eBay for sale that's been worn less than 10 times
