My laptop that I had for 5 years completely died so today I bought this HP thing that comes with Vista...

How do you make the screen brighter? I fucking hate vista.

Where's the calculator???

Vista really sucks. Get a copy of XP Pro.

It isn't that bad. Screen brightness depends on the laptop. Usually it is FUNCTION + another key that has a sun symbol. Alternately, find the mobility center in the taskbar on the right (looks like a battery and a plug) and change off of power saving mode. Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> Calculator (same place as XP I believe)

the dork squad or whatever at Best Buy said that installing XP is very difficult since some of the hardware doesnt have drivers for XP...

This machine has like tons of memory, really fast processor, and it still takes an eternity to get into windows. I'd say a minute 30 before I can really even use anything.

HP comes bloated with factory installed crap I'm sure. First stop -- Control Panel >> Programs and Features

Uninstall all that junk.

Next, Start >> All Programs >> Administrative Tools >> System Configuration

Then go to the startup tab and remove any other extraneous programs in the startup sequence.

Vista is sooooooooooooo sloooooooooooooow. Dell actually had to start offering XP again because so many people complained. I just had clients with brand new top of the line laptops and Vista ran so slow that when typing on the command line it literally displayed output at 1 line a second!

*nix pride!

I just got a new Asus yesterday and it flies. My previous Acer laptop was pretty snappy and my desktop I built last year is still fast. I had a lot more delays under XP because of memory leak issues with Photoshop and Firefox.

I installed it on a P4 I have next to me. XP was quite fast but under Vista there are frequent CPU spikes (every 4 seconds or so) of 100% when idle and 50% mem usage right after boot.

Installing XP on an HP laptop is a fucking bitch because of the sata hard drives. Don't even bother trying unless you go out and buy a usb floppy drive. the xp installation program (even with sp2) will ONLY check a floppy for additional drivers, not a usb memory stick or hard drive. it's fucking gay. As for vista being slow, I don't find that. It's totally fine if you have a recent computer.

Violinist, click on the battery icon in your system tray and then configure the power mode you are using. Screen brightness is in there. If you go in to advanced settings you can even set a different brightness for when it's plugged in and when it's not, as well as a variety of other settings that affect battery life.

No I hadn't, but thanks. Frankly the only time i've ever had a problem was with this laptop, but it looks like a nifty tool.

Jesus everything is shittier with vista. I downloaded Azareus so I could get the shows I like (which were lost when my Dell laptop died), and this new Azareus which looks really gay downloads super slow (on my dell it downloaded at 800kbps), and I don't know how to stop it from seeding. It's the same connection any everything.

I hate Vista, and it's fucking super slow. My old laptop which I got 5 years ago was faster.

What are the specs of your current laptop?

I really don't know what MS was thinking, I mean I guess they were trying to compete with Apple on the graphics end of the GUI, but they failed miserably.
