yes sizing down ½ fit perfectly, without insole and I was wearing med-weight socks at the time

The boots themselves are really nice...I just don't need a black boot and for the price I didnt want to keep it feeling lukewarm towards em. The stock photos make them look really burgundy, which mine arent. Maybe every boot has its own coloration depending on how they treated the leather but I thought they sent the wrong color tho it does have some of the 'cherry' if you really look at it, but they still look black

Thats weird...I saw some photos of someone wearing them in sufu and they looked way too red so I decided not to get them. You could be right about the difference in color among pairs.

I was considering these, based on your description of the color I'm glad I didn't order them. The photos on the website do make them appear more burgandy colored and thats what I found so appealing about them. I'll just wait for my jcrew x redwing boots to arrive.

ok so Zappos fucked up and also I am an idiot

the 7½ I got must be the BLACK even tho I ordered and the labeling all says it's "black cherry" because I decided to double check and unpack my return, not having even tried on the size 8 because the 7½ fit fine. The size 8s ARE the true black cherry which is a burgundy oxblood, very red. And wearing both, TBH they feel the same around my foot. The 7.5 is about .25" shorter in length, but that's it.

I decided to keep the size 8 black cherry and return the 7.5 blacks. FWIW in terms of sizing, I would say a ½ size down is ideal, but your true size will fit nearly as well (and maybe a safer bet if you dont like your boot too close to your foot in the toebox). These don't feel loose at all (just stiff from not being broken in)

Dusty, so I will post a pic tomorrow of these. btw, they look badass, they're like a luxe version of the Doc Marten 1460 boot, which is what I'd been wanting

Cool, I'd like to see how Bill wears his, I'm sure we're both approaching very different aesthetics with the same boot.

yea, I'm glad I double checked, I didnt bother trying on the 8s since the box was wrapped in plastic and the 7.5s fit fine, but then a last minute bout of "Let's be competely sure" kicked in

Which store was that? Thanks.

Not sure the exact street number, but it's off Bedford Avenue, on the same street as that muffin shop, Sea restaurant and AA. It's really close to the L station. The place has a simple name, something like Shoe Store or Shoe Shop. My guess is N 6th St.

I'm guessing the polish used might have an affect on color too.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like the Gentleman Traveler lacks the Red Wing insignia on the ankle, which makes it more appealing to me than the 1911.

Anyone know if the two have the same last/sizing?

GS, do you feel like the Red Wings are a decent value when compared to your more expensive, but presumably better quality, Alden Cordovans?

You're right, the GT doesnt have the Red Wing imprint on the ankle, which is good

Kind of hard to compare the GT with the Aldens....the Aldens can be worn with dressier fits. The GT I got to 'upgrade' my Doc Martens, and to have a nice boot I can wear in Europe this winter. The GTs commando sole and waterproof Horween leather fit that bill perfectly, as does the cherry black colorway. Paying full retail for the GTs I dont feel like I overpaid, altho if you can get them for cheaper even better. These boots are solid, and really nice substantial leather uppers. Value for the dollar, both boots are worth the premium they command imo. But the RWings are ½ the cost of the Aldens so there's a big price difference

GS - thanks for the considered response. I admire your sense of style and value your opinion.

Good to know the Horween is waterproof. That and the commando sole are positives for the wet winters here in Portland OR.

For those interested in this boot,
Zappos is out of the black cherry (item number 9011) in most sizes (black still available). However, Red Wing customer service advised me that your local Red Wing store can order it from inventory for store delivery.

Alternately, you can order from the Red Wing, MN store at 651-388-6233. They don't have the boot in store, but can order from inventory for home delivery (approx $10 shipping). Their computers showed 28 pairs left in total inventory in size 9, for example. So still decent stock available.
