caffeine - little/no effect?

im 20 y/o, non smoker, and an absolute lightweight when it comes to alcohol/mj. though, over my entire life ive never felt a buzz from coffee. lately ive been making double/triples shots of medium roast using my dorm roomate's "Barista". (ive never made espresso before- it's SO good. i would drink cups of espresso daily if it didnt stain teeth or for the possible health risks). still, no matter how early or late in the day, no effect at all. is anyone else like this? im considering just eating some beans atm...

I drink coffee every morning because I like something hot, the flavor and am not a big fan of tea.
However, I could drink a cup of coffee or a Pepsi and be fine and go to bed half an hour later. I rarely get affected by caffine. I used to drink lots of Jaeger/RedBull and I would even start yawning by 1am.
The only thing I've noticed that perks me up and makes me antsy is the new VitaminWater Energy Drink.

I drink quite a bit of caffeine. ~2 (sugarfree) redbulls a day and probably an average of 4 shots of esspresso, then another couple cups of drip coffee in the evening after dinner. It definitely doesn't have a noticeable effect on me at all, but I sure do like it. I would say that I just happen to enjoy the flavor of these beverages, but that'd be a lie: I'm addicted to caffeine's stimulant properties and have built a very high tolerance. My level of consumption is petty much just to maintain.

When you get older you will likely become more sensitive to both the primary and side effects.

Have you tried going without any caffeine? Do you not feel withdrawal?

for me the flavor is the reason. when it comes to beverages, im not into sweets such as juices or soda. i stick with carbonated water, teas (no sugar), wine, espresso (no sugar). as for withdraw.. i dont think i have experienced it. (we do run out of beans for a few days sometimes) after posting this, i googled and found another thread where a couple people posted that caffeine didnt affect them until later in life 30-40s. i geuss other people dont feel its effects either. i just thought it was unusual for someone like me who can get a buzz from 2 glasses of wine, and gets dizzy/tired from a cigarette.

When I was in my 20's caffeine had little or no effect on me. Now that I am in my mid-thirties I can't have caffeine after about 3-4 pm if I want to fall asleep at a reasonable hour.

That's interesting. Some people are not very sensitive:

Some are so sensitive that they experience paranoia:

The effects of elevated stress hormones, over time, will cause more severe side effects and contribute to premature aging. I agree with the comments about the effects getting worse with age. I used to drink up to 8 cups a day, but now when I reach for a cup in the afternoon, I can't even finish it because I start to feel jittery after a couple of sips. Getting out of bed in the morning and maintaining energy levels later in the day is harder. I'm planning to cut down even more.

You can get a useful effect out of it without a buzz per se. I mean, if I have four cups or so I don't know if I feel a tangible sensation, like with nicotine (particularly the first cig of the day), but it certainly wakes me up and helps me focus.

As far as withdrawal, I don't really get it now but there was a time when if I didn't have at least a full thermos of coffee in the morning I was tired and had a terrible headache.

Drip has more caffeine than espresso.
I am 34, I drink about 1 pot of drip coffee a day, 10-12 cups (8 oz, but I use a 24 oz mug) each morning, and I use a fine grind on my grinder, and usually double the grounds. Note, I drink this in about a half hour in the morning (by 7:30 am).
If I do not time my caffine intake each day I am totally destroyed for the day.
I can not sleep in too long or I get headaches, if I do not have enough, I get head aches and I get spacey.
I do supplement it often when I travel.
It doesnt have a stimulant effect persay, but I am ADD, so I think that it perhaps has a stabilizing effect.
So, I would say I am addicted and do get withdraw (or the begining of it) if I do not have it when I need is. Yeah, I said need.

Does being addicted take the pleasure out of it?

There is also a difference in how nicotine addict "enjoys" a cigarette as opposed to how a non addicted individual enjoys an occasional cigar.

I definitely didn't think myself that affected by drinking espresso as often as I do until I stopped having double espresso's an hour or so before going to bed. While I occasionally had trouble immediately falling asleep before, I haven't had a single problem since. I don't have withdrawls but I definitely use it as a stimulant in the morning (even if it doesn't always help) and in the after (almost always helps).

Yes, for me, being addicted means I "need" my coffee as opposed to want it. I don't even like the smell of it anymore.

Like smoking, I do love every aspect of coffee, the smell, the taste, the feel, the heat, waking up.
So, being horribly addicted to it, does not diminish the pleasures of it.
I will note, that I usually order drip coffee with 2-3 shots of espresso, that is a treat.
The cyclops, I call it.
