Color/pairing suggestions for a fedora or trilby

Thread Starter
The weather is getting windy, chilly, and rainy in Chicago, and while my overcoat and trenchcoat are helping my body stay warm and dry, my head could use some protection as well. A beanie or baseball cap just wont do. And a paper boy makes me look like.... a boy. So I figure a fedora or a trilby should do the trick.

What color should my first hat be? Should I try to match the color to my suits - which are mostly grey, navy, and brown? What if I'm wearing chalkstripes? Or should I match it to my coats - which are all black? Or should I match it to my shoes? Or is color pairing not really important with hats?

Previous posts haven't said too much about this matter, and your comments would be greatly appreciated.

Charcoal grey is the most versatile color for most wardrobes. I only wear felt hats with outerwear so I don't look to coordinate them with my suits, but some do. Best to think about coordinating rather than matching.

Unless you are of the Hasidic persuasion, Don't match you hat to your suit or coat.

You can stay in the same tone (Tan trench- brown hat etc. ) but don't do matchy-matchy. Dove grey or lovat is a nice combination with grey or navy suits/coats.

For a first hat, if you're wearing black coats, go with a medium or lighter grey.

I wear felt without a coat when there's a chance of showers. Don't match the suit. Navy works well with gray and vice versa. Light gray can look good with dark gray. And brown can look good with brown shoes.

STP has a good price for the Tilley. You may want to search for a STP discount code.
