I've got a birthday party coming up which is semi-formal. (The location will be a casual but fairly trendy bar/charcuterie) Normally my go to would be a nice shirt and tie with a vest instead of a suit jacket, because

A: For my height and build vests are extremely flattering
B: If I'm going to be drinking and partying all night, vests tend to stay in place, look neat and feel comfortable, long after a suit jacket has gotten wrinkled, too hot and cumbersome.

HOWEVER; I'm thinking about skipping the slacks and going with a pair of dressier jeans instead.

So, would dark jeans, a vest probably somewhere from mid-dark grey to possibly black, over a white and black gingham shirt and black tie work out? Here are some examples of the shirt direction I am leaning towards

I'm also wondering, if I go for this look, would you suggest a flatter fabric tie as opposed to something silk/glossier?

Do I need to find a more casual vest fabric? I already have a grey and a black vest that could potentially work, but they both have the bemberg back, and I feel like that would look too out of place over jeans? A vest with a regular fabric back is going ot take me a little more footwork to find, but if I go for the jeans, I'd think its going to be a requirement correct?

Finally, with this entire look in mind: Sleeves cuffed? Cool or Dbag?

Thanks for your help guys.

Jacket and no tie > any vest combos.

The belts in those pics kind of bother me. How about solid t-shirt and vest?

Looks clean, go with a brown or navy Woolish texture and a deep indigo denim, flannel or knit tie. As long as the denim isn't a sloppy fit it will come together nicely.

Dbag, but the people you're out with will think you look cool.

Also, this should probably go in the small questions thread.

Couple of things to bear in mind:

- The vest shouldn't come from a three-piece suit. It should be and look like an odd vest, preferably with some texture to it. Ditto the tie. Someone mentioned a knit tie, which is probably a good way to go here.
- Vests tend to look stupid over an untucked shirt. Shirts tend to look stupid tucked into low-rise jeans. Vests also tend to look stupid when there's a gap between the bottom of the vest and the top of the belt. In other words, you need to wear jeans that are at least mid-rise to avoid all of these pitfalls.
- If you're going to wear a long sleeve shirt without a jacket, it tends to look more traditionally flattering - which I assume is what you're going for - if you roll the sleeves up. It creates more of a visual v effect for your upper body.

Yes, a more casual waistcoat fabric would be best, something with a texture.

Always wear a tie with a vest, it looks so much better. Don't worry too much about the tie fabric, just use one that complements or contrasts your other clothes. If you have a patterned shirt, use a plain tie to avoid too much pattern in your getup.
