Furniture - How Long to Wait?

I ordered some couches from a local furniture store exactly 1 month ago. At the time, they said they couldn't give me an exact delivery date, and they did not put one on the contract, because the couches I ordered were going to be custom upholstered from fabrics that I chose at the store. However, they told me that it would be about 4 to 6 weeks.

Today, I called the store to see if they could update me on the status of the delivery of the couches. The lady told me that she would call me back to give me an exact date, but that it would probably be some time at the end of November, which is more like 10 weeks at best. Should I be getting worried? Is there anything I can do to get my couches faster?

But did you know ahead of time that that's how long you would be waiting? I mean, I understand that these pieces are being custom upholstered so it takes a little longer, but I'm worried because originally they told me 4-6 weeks and now they are telling me end of November. I'm hoping that by the end of November they don't tell me something even later.

I think I was told 8-12 weeks. Furniture manufacturers are awful when it comes to delivery time. FWIW, it was a bent plywood desk. Not anything that should have taken months.

Furniture stores are notoriously slow, particularly if the pieces are being shipped from overseas. I wouldn't worry unless you have no furniture in your house right now.

Well, I have no couches. To watch tv I have to either sit on the bed in the bedroom or sit on the dining room table. Maybe I'll get a cheap recliner in the meantime.

The wait is long and unpredictable, even if you're in the same country and town talking to the people who build the thing. A friend who lives in Sweden ordered a couch from a Swedish company, and it took about 2x as long to come as promised. This doesn't seem to be uncommon.

My dealer will loan me pieces while mine are in production.

That's somewhat encouraging.

It's a selling strategy for any custom and special order type things. Quote a faster time to get a sale and then since they've already waited a month and a half, telling the client that it is going to be another month (which the store probably knew all along) isn't as big of a deal.

Warehousing furniture in the states is a very expensive and tricky thing. Chances are your couch might be upholstered in vietnam or china, and then shipped over

this is what i like about bespoke. It's expensive, but at least it's honest.

Yeah, the domestic upholstery sources are dwindling as we speak. What might have happened is the order was planned for domestic-make but got re-sourced.

That said, your order might very well be complete, but the manufacturer has to arrange transportation to a distributor which means they've got to fill a container - although given a 4 week window it does sound domestic-make - then the distributor has to fill a truck that runs a route by your retail store, and those can be hard to come by, especially if sales are slow in the area (which today is a very safe assumption for most, if not all areas). Once the retailer gets it they should review it and make any final tweaks before delivery, and presto - you have a couch.

I just took delivery of 8 bookcases for our new library. I was told 4 to 8 weeks, depending on how long it would take to fill the truck coming from the manufacturer. It ended up being 4 weeks.
