New England and Boston

Thread Starter
Either today or tomorrow morning I will be leaving for a trip to travel around New England for a couple days. I live in the Mystic - Stonington Connecticut area. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=e...wloc=addr&om=1 I don't know where to go really besides Boston which I have a friend I'll be visiting. They can host me for as long as I need without minding as we're all 18. I want to visit some of the truely amazing sights of NE, the colleges, history, old pilgrim type stuff, the witch trial, it's all very interesting to me. I'm not sure if I want to go all the way up into Maine but am down for anything really. Suggestions would be much appreciated. Edit I've never gone before because I recently moved here.

Some destinations along the coast that sound like they'd be what you're interested in. Most are very touristy, but mostly it's because they are so historic. These spring to mind off the top of my head, with a focus on US history. I'm a local (south shore of Boston), and I have been to all of these and think they would be a nice intro to what makes New England—with regards to the birth of our nation—the most historically rich region in the US. From south to north:

Don't forget to hit up Louis, Boston and Drinkwater's in Cambridge.

If you're a homosexual, Provincetown is a hoot. If not, then it's interesting.

Newburyport is also said by out-of-towners to be worth a visit for its Federal architecture.

Newport RI, for its 18th-century downtown, 19th century summer cottages on the shore, and some of the nicest boats you'll see anywhere. Check into the wharf at IYRS for some beautiful oldies.

Andover, Mass., for the academy which has a surprisingly first-rate art museum (the Addison Gallery).

Concord, just because the center of town looks exactly as a New England town should in autumn.

I'm not, but I'd say it's a hoot, too.

Walden Pond would also be a nice fall stop while you're in Concord.

Also, since it sounds like you're interested in some history, Newport has several mansion tours that are interesting from a social history/architecture perspective.
