I was going to recommend Turks & Caicos. I also like Grand Cayman, although I'm not sure they're totally rebuilt from the last Hurricane. Not sure if St. Martins or St. Barts is out of that price range.

My grandparents go to Turks & Caicos frequently. They love it there.

ok, so I ended up in Cancun - in an all inclusive. first time I've ever done this type of thing.

1. on the one hand, great beach, great weather, great pools, the sea is fantastic, basically sitting around with the family all day, going from beach to pool to nap, to meals, to sitting on the porch smoking a cigar, and then starting over. a bar with frozen well margaritas every 20 feet or so. can't be bad.

2. on the other hand - the vast majority of the people in the hotel are americans who have never been out of the states, aside from to these "all inclusive" place in the caribian. the service is pretty bad - on christmas day we had to ask maybe 5 times to have our room serviced, and it only happend at 7 pm, we had to argue to get the two conecting rooms we reserved, etc. the food is lousy, but very good for the kids - basically pizza, hamburgers and fries, fruit at every meal.

I've never taken a vacation during christmas week before - and we reserved pretty late, so this was the best we could do. we are paying about $10K for 2 rooms for 2 weeks. last year, off season, we got a much nicer place in CArtegena, with much better service, for about half that, non- inclusive - so if you added meals and food it was about the same, but for christmas week it would have been maybe twice what we are paying for the room now.

i dont know about price but i think st martins is pretty expensive. but if you can find a deal it is amazing. i went there on a cruise so didnt exactly stay that long. but i did atv the whole island from the french point to the dutch point. beautiful island, beautiful beaches, and none of them were that busy. the people were also really, really nice!

Next time you should consider the Pacific side of Mexico. There are some splendid places starting south in Acapulco, going up to Zihuatanejo, then the coast of Colima (Las Hadas in Manzanillo), Jalisco and Nayarit (Puerto Vallarta) to Baja California (Cabo San Lucas).

The great thing about western Mexico is fantastic infrastructure in the way of airports with multiple international flights, good highways, modern towns with international and great Mexican cuisine, and a slighty older, professional crowd. Accommodations range from budget to US$1,000+ a day establishments.
