"We couldn't see It , but we created, a place between truth and overrated"
Thousand Foot Krutch

This forum is a wonderful place to find great info on shoes, etc. But.............

Often I see threads pop up where people talk about how they are just starting out in business and they need to dress up for work. People help them with fit etc. but often lead them down trails of spending $300 on a shirt in order for it to have nicer buttons. I can tell you this, unlike shoes, no shirt is worth $300 for the buttons.

The truth: The most important thing in a shirt is the fit. Even low quality shirts can last many years if they aren't non-iron.
Overrated: Buying a $300 dollar shirt, that many still wear undershirts with, for the more comfortable fabric and nicer buttons.

Often I see threads about how only should buy conservative outfits.

The truth: The most import thing when starting a business wardrobe is buying versatile items. This is great advice, but at what point should people try to acquire some individuality with what they wear vs. being a minion. There is nothing wrong with standing out if you can own it. These conservative people probably name their kinds Jon and Eric in order to follow the crowd. There is nothing wrong with being unique, in fact being unique is amazing and try to tell my kids that everyday. I don't need them following the crowd and drinking a ton just as I don't feel Menswear can be explained in x, y, and z. NOT EVERYONE WANTS TO DRESS LIKE AN OLD MAN :)

Overrated: Buying only shirts in very simple pattern. Very few people wear coats all day and there is no need for you too look so boring if you take off your coat to run to the bathroom. Blue and white are not the only two colors that look good.

Anyone have any feelings like this? It is very hard to weed through the group think to come up with the truth around here.

I completely get what you are saying and agree with the sentiment of much of it.... But this is forum about classical menswear (clue's in the name). So if you're interested in talking about a more "GQ Look" for even the best will in the world, you are probably in the wrong place.

I like more 'modern' stuff too, leather jackets, some workwear brands etc, but I come here to talk about classic stuff.

I agree with you. I posted a fit pic once and was shredded thoroughly - because my suit (a bespoke Italian affair) had "self defeating stripes" or some nonsense like that. Since then I have come to realize and accept that this forum is, like jedwards said, more about conformity to the unspoken rule of the old classic menswear. I also like to be a little more daring and have a personal style of formal clothing that departs the traditional menswear (classic) rules. But I won't show it in here - because this really is not the place for that. I am way behind the fashion because I do not own a single grenadine/cashmere solid color tie... :(

Before I get flamed some more - these are just my thoughts.

Define "classic" and how pants that don't even reach your shoes become classic? To me they sometimes look like capris and they are admired for them with how great they fit. Heck they don't even reach their dang shoe when they stand straight up. How is that a classic look? Wouldn't wearing a suit, dress shirt, tie, brogue shoes, etc. alone be regarded as classic?

As long as a shirt was button cuff white/blue (a plus if its BD) and a solid color grenadine/wool tie - yep.

Actually I completely disagree with you. An Acute Style is someone who consistently breaks just about every rule there is, and he is always one of the most liked and best looking members here. I too often break the rules, although I cannot claim to look as good as AAS.

Link to thread where people recommend $300 dress shirts to someone just starting their working life? I don't read those kinds of threads that often, but I can't ever remember seeing something like that, unless it was in the context of "if you spend this much more, these are the things that get better"

I respect your opinion and your right to have one about these things. What I think you fail to realize and one of the reasons people may find you polarizing is that you dont seem to want to respect other's opinions. It appears that the group think you rail against is the same sort of thing you covet. Most of your posts seem to say, "Everyone here is a sheep, I can see through it and am a forward thinking orignial. NOW WHO'S WITH ME?!" Surely you can see that by trying to get people on your side and being contrarian about things that you are going to be labelled a troll. I have lurked here for years and only recently began contributing, but I have never seen a $300 shirt recomended to someone building their wardrobe. Similary, you have posted in several different threads about "classic" business dress and why you think its dumb. We get it, you dont like it. If you want to start a discussion, fine. But if the purpose is to get people to agree with you about how dumb we all are, you better become a better salesman pretty quickly.
