I keep finding myself going back to the Monsters of Folk album every couple weeks. It has a coherent theme and very talented members (M Ward, Conor Oberst, and Jim James play well off each other). Here is a good take on one of their tracks:
Best LA bands were probably pre-1970 (Doors, Byrds, Love, Captain Beefheart), but there are some good ones that came out after that time: Van Halen, Chili Peppers, Jane's Addiction and who can forget these guys:
