Lots of Neil Young. "...but only love can break your heart" What a great line/melody. Lately, I've been feeling like it is much more difficult to write enduring substantial songs with effective and engaging melodies, simple lyrics, and slight flourishes but without cliches or relying on a gimmicky style. It's harder than writing the experimental stuff that is widely lauded these days. 30 years ago, the discord and the cacophony was groundbreaking and indicative of something substantial, a real rejection of standards, but it doesn't resonate with me on either front as much anymore, either because I'm getting old or because rejecting those standards is no longer relevant. These days, it's Ryan Adams, Neil Young, Tom Waits, etc.
