What have been your best music finds?

I had a great one this summer that involved two buys...I found through a friend that a collector was liquidating his Classic Records reissues of Living Stereo titles. Classic is a high quality audiophile reissue label that sells 180 gram and 200 gram titles for around $35-50 per title. I was able to buy 40 albums at around $15 an LP. We did two sets of 20, most were sealed, a few were played once. The music is terrific as Living Stereo performances were classics.

Do you have any favorite finds in the record store (CD or LP) that come to mind?

I discovered Tegan and Sara this summer and I them. (They are depicted in my avatar) I was just browsing though a music store one day and their CD cover caught my eye so I bought it. I had never heard of them before so I guess I was kind of lucky that I ended up liking them.

I have to check them out. I'm not familiar with their music. Are they on vinyl as well?

I doubt that their music is on vinyl but who knows. A little background... Tegan and Sara are an indie-rock band that broke into the Canadian scene in 1998, and have released 5 albums so far. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine named their album, So Jealous, on their list of the best 50 albums of the year. Their latest album (and my favourite) is titled The Con. Tegan and Sara are lesbian twin sisters from Calgary, Alberta.

Electric Light Orchestra. Not that niche but I am the only one that I know that listens to them.

I know few friends of mine that listen to The Band. For reasons I don't want to discuss right now, their albums have saved my life (literally).

I found a mint condition vinyl copy of Tina Brooks' True Blue in a shop in Seattle. Probably one of my favourite hard bop records. I think I paid around $15 for it six years ago.
I bought the CD version and the vinyl sits on the shelf.

Great album. To find in mint is terrific luck.

I had another stellar find today. Van Morrison green label Warner LP of His Band and Street Choir. It is flawless; owner must have been a collector who played it once. $7.

Love The Band. Don't Do It is a major fave to this day.

I found Prince's Black Album, on vinyl in a used bookstore in (iirc) 1988 or 89. This was one of the bootleg copies that made its way out of Europe. I stepped aside so a friend could buy it, he made me a tape of it and I wished I had bought it from the first hearing. I did get the CD as soon as it hit the shelves.

God decided my ears have not known enough hurt in my life, so he created Tegan and Sara, then gave them guitars.

i found the beach boys first 45, surfin', on the candix label, in my stepfather's small collection of records, pristine condition. probably my most valuable record. i am not into collecting records, though; i prefer listening.

It's almost too tough to "find" obscure or out-there music in San Francisco. I mean, with a lot of good record stores catering to the beat hound, it's pretty damn hard to be the first one to unearth some rarity. Just hit up Groove Merchant and you'll walk out with a dozen killer records you've never heard before.

But, my best find was in Amsterdam about 5 years ago when I stumbled upon a record store and found a compilation of mid-60s Turkish psychedelic rock and funk. One song is so funky and acided-out on the guitar it gives me nightmares.
