Ultimately, I think they are what will sell. As dumb as it sounds, people will be able to relate to them and will be more comfortable with them in their home doing chores, cooking, or whatever. The human body is also very versatile. Modeling it after humans will mean one robot will be able to accomplish many diverse tasks. Something on treads would have trouble getting up stairs, stepping over obstacles, etc. You might be able to design individual robots for individual tasks, but i think the humanoid form is most versatile.
