Hi all - can someone recommend a high end elegant pocket knife? I have been searching for hours and all I can find are awful things that wouldn't look out of place on Game of Thrones.

I am wanting something very simple, small, and elegant. Preferably from a company with a bit of history (European).

Boker from Germany, Laguiole of France, Fallkniven of Sweden, or Fox, Lionsteel and Viper from Italy would be good to look at. Maybe something from Sheffield, England.

Swiss Army knives w/ custom scales provide another set of options if you want something fancy.

Al Mar makes excellent knives, like this pearl Hawk, but they're Japanese/American.

Lots of good American options too, like Northwoods, Canal Street, Chris Reeves, Case, Buck, Barlow, etc.

And of course, there are customs, like from our own Osprey Guy.

I've carried this little number for the past 7 years.

It certainly meets my definition of simple, small and elegant. Made by Mike Alsdorf.

I carry a pocket knife for self defense when I can't carry a gun, for cutting seatbelts in an emergency, and for general utility. I typically carry a SOG twitch folder.

I am interested in the Case Tuxedo Knife for wear with a dinner jacket when a folder clipped to my pocket may look classless.

I don't understand why people carry pocket knives. Please enlighten me.

If the concept of needing to cut something is foreign to you, I doubt an explanation is going to help. If you aren't going to contribute, start your own thread.

Anyway, a daily carry knife should be utilitarian, not elegant. I carry a Dragonfly 2 by Spyderco. It's very small and easily opened with one hand.

A daily carry knife "should" be one which reflects the individual user's needs and preferences. There is no downside to elegance assuming that utility is not meaningfully compromised. My choice for an elegant daily carry knife reflects the reality of my elegant (i.e. business formal) daily wear more so than, say, some super-tactical-covert-black-ops-ninja-assassin piece would. As for the "why?" question posted above, the knife is one of human kind's oldest tools still in use. I use it as a tool to cut things. I could open a package at the office with a box cutter, but it please me to use an instrument of greater quality, beauty, and yes, elegance.

I tend to agree with this. I only carry my knife on casual days, and I chose a spyderco chaparral because of its size, particularly because it's very thin and light. I also made a point to avoid something that looks too tactical. I think this strikes the right balance. I toyed with the idea of getting something more elegant, but I am very happy with this purchase.

Heh, not that I carry around a knife, but if I did, it'd be the Swiss Army Pocket Pal (made in Switzerland); it's a good value

Thanks everyone for the great suggestions - I have ended up getting a nice little gentlemen's knife from a Sheffield company. Very simple with two blades.

If I think about my daily life I can't think of any time I would need a pocket knife. But then again. I'm not stranded on a desert island.

On the other hand, I used my knife probably a half dozen times today. Cutting tags off thrift store finds, sharpening a pencil, and as an eating utensil when the McDonalds worker at the drive- through gave me a spoon to eat a salad!!

Nobody is trying to convince you to carry one. You asked why others choose to do so and you have received responses. Or were you simply looking for the opportunity to mock the choices of others?
