Ska Bands

Anyone here into ska??? Never really bought any albums but have always seemed to enjoy the occasional song that I've heard. Can anyone recommend good groups/albums?

Madness might not be pure ska, but they're catchy as hell. One Step Beyond is a great disc to start with.

Depends on what you consider "ska"

Reel Big Fish and Save Ferris? hell no

2 Tone, Desmond Dekker/Prince Buster/Symarip/Ansel Collins/etc, and 3rd wave bands from labels like Unicorn? HELLS YA

*most modern day ska just sounds like frat boy party music to me. no soul

I don't like ska, but my wife does. Try The Toasters, the first No Doubt album, the Hippos, Reel Big Fish, Catch 22, Blue Meanies...

Man, was I into Ska in the 10th grade. My favorites were Mustard Plug, Mu330, and(Gainesville's own) Less Than Jake.

If you pick up a copy the The Trojan Story, which is a massive compilation by Trojan Records, it has a lot of great ska (mixed in with reggae and other non-ska) songs/bands.

think laurel aitken, skatalites, desmond dekker. trojan or studio ones labels. and only listen to it if you actually like it. no posing. new wave is crap total crap.

totally, but which is why I asked what the OP considered "ska"

If he's into Reel Big Fish and Less than Jake, there's a good chance he won't like the Trojan stuff

2 Tone is can't miss selections. Even all the frat boy party ska bands were in some way influenced by 2 Tone bands.

Def get Madness "One Step Beyond", The Specials first s/t, and The Selecter "Too Much Pressure" for starters

Another one is Operation Ivy "Energy". One of the best bands of all time, and they (unfortunately) created the ska/punk sound that's so (unfortunately) popular today

"Foundation" by The Skatalites is probably the best ska record ever recorded, and ever will be recorded. ESSENTIAL

Since the finest Ska song ever recorded was (White Man) In Hammersmith Palais, I will once again have to go with the only band that matters. In reality their best stuff was always more 2nd gen Ska or early rockabilly than pure punk.

Enough with the Wham! references already.

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, though many have what I've found to be an irrational hatred of this band.

Don't mean to hijack but I can't see starting another thread for this: I've realized that as I slowly converted my music collection from vinyl to CD certain titles were dropped, most purposely but some inadvertently. I recently saw that a 30th anniversary edition of Culture's 'Two 7s Clash'l came out, and thought to myself "how long since I listened to that? 10, 15, 20 years?! So I do a thorough search and come up blank - either someone stole it or I never got it on CD. Anyway, I've got it now and it's just awesome: Joseph Hill & Co.'s harmonies make for a sonic rasta listening experience.

I have nothing to add to this list, but I think the best place to start is the Trojan compilations. There are maybe two or three dozen of them, all kinds of ska, rocksteady and a bunch of early reggae, and you can get ~50 songs in a set for $15 on Amazon.

The Skatalites rule, but The (English) Beat is my favorite. Desmond Dekker is timeless.
