The bun has to be steamed and is usually an S. Rosen's. I have been to many different stands and have never heard of the 'shake shack'. The best places are probably, Hot Doug's, Gene and Jude's on the outskirts of the city, Clark Street Dog (although very trendy) and the late Demon Dogs (RIP). There are many others, but these are some I could think of now.

The buns are (poppy) seeded, yes? Shake Shack is the only place in NYC to get a Chicago-style dog....

im not a big hot dog fan, but if i think of a place to go to for hot dog i like Pink's in Los angeles.

if it werent for the line (the hot dog is overrated) , I would get one everytime i drive by the area, but the line is huge and no parking .

Poppy seed is the way to go. Next time in NYC, I will have to go to the shack if you recommend..

Be aware that these are NY's version of the Chicago Dog! As a connoisseur of the Windy City dog, you'd probably be better served by checking out a NY dog at either Katz's or Papaya King...
