Hey all,
Just wanted to ask because I'm in the market for a new overcoat - and I am thinking of going the tailored route (I live in Hong Kong so it's readily accessible).
How does the amount of workmanship in an overcoat compare to that of a suit? I'm asking because I've been comparing the prices across different "tiers" of tailors. A Zegna trofeo suit has been quoted to me at $10,000 - $11,000 HKD (~USD $1200) at a "mid range" tailor and $12,000 - $14,000 (~USD $1,900) at "high range" but not big three (ah man, ww or baroman) tailors. However, quotations for an overcoat made from Colombo 100% cashmere have been $10,000 (~USD $1,300), $15,000 (~USD $2000) and $30,000 (~USD $3,900) at the "mid range", "high range" and Ah Man Hing Cheong, respectively.
I'm just wondering why there is such a larger differential for overcoats relative to the suits. Is it because overcoats require more workmanship? Or is it simply a product of economics - that there is an exponentially larger markup for higher priced fabrics?
Thanks for any advice!
