Thanks all! And +1 on their versatility; those trous are actually a very hopsack / casual pair, they photo'd finer than they present IRL, but still - the boots go with everything from flannels, to cords, to twills. icon_gu_b_slayer[1].gif

The gray is really dark brown (bad lighting). They are Doucal's (Yoox sale).

Hi Boot Guys!

So I don't claim to be a Boot Guy in any way (quite the opposite, really), but I have been on a quest to add a great pair of boots to my rotation (a OneBoot, if you will). Since I'm looking to only add one pair I'm looking for a pretty middle-of-the-road, classic option. Here are the specs I'm envisioning - happy to get feedback here:

-captoe derby boot

-Dainite or equivalent sole

-nothing too pointy or blobby

-something in mid-brown, preferably with a bit of texture

Here are some models I'm considering, but definitely open to other options:

-C&J Coniston ($470ish) I would get this right off the bat but it only seems to come in tan, which I'm not a fan of as much (they used to do a brown one that looks perfect). I could probably darken it a bit but not sure if it's worth the trouble.

-AS Cambridge (under $400): seems like a great option for the price and I love the AS shoes I have, but concerned that the 87 last is a bit too pointy for this style.

-Carmina Jumper boot in brown grain ($575): I bought this exact boot last year for about $400 (pre price hike) but it was too small. It's a solid boot, but after selling at a loss and then the price hike I'm not sure I can stomach buying this one again

These are all pretty similar but I'd love to get some feedback! Happy to add more models to this short list as well. What would your OneBoot be?

Get the Cambridge. I just bought it and found it to be a bit too blobby for my liking. Since you're concerned it's too pointy, I think you'll find it probably hits a sweet spot for you. FWIW it was very well made.

I have the Allen Edmonds First Avenue boots and very happy with them. It's similar to the others and meets all your criteria.

Here's a photo of the AE First Ave to get a better idea of the shade of brown.

I have to say, the Mahogany AS looks great.

Nice, thanks! When I first saw those last year I felt like the captoe was a bit too big (ironically, the opposite problem of the Park ave), but agreed that it's definitely a good choice as well.

I dig the shoe shine box.

Thanks! I love that box.

The shoe shine box was my grandfather's, then my father's, now mine.

Guess that makes it an heirloom, must be 60 years old by now.

You need a chelsea boot in your life

Now I'm really envious; +1 for heritage! icon_gu_b_slayer[1].gif

If I were to pick one boot out of your options, it would be the Cambridge.  I have only owned the Coniston and it's a great boot, but I think the darker colour on the Cambridge would be more versatile.  Not to state the obvious, but you should also consider which model fits you best.
