How To Heal Lips

I've been on Accutane for almost two months. Within the past couple of weeks, my lips have become extremely chapped. Does anyone have any recommendations for a chapstick or balm that would heal my lips and prevent the peeling and scabbing that I have now?

Even with the best chapstick that exists, you're still probably going to be dogged by chapped/cracked/bleeding lips, particularly as winter arrives. That's the nature of the beast when you're dealing with Accutane. It makes you life a living hell while you're on it, but the payoff of being acne-free is worth it IMO.

As for a recommendation, I personally like Burt's Bees, but I'm not sure how the peppermint oil would work with dry/cracked skin. Maybe ask your dermatologist for a recommendation.

Go for some Kiehl's lip balm #1. It works incredibly well on cracked/damaged lips.

Some tips here. But, in case you don't already know, Accutane is based on vitamin A and therefore adding much vitamin A to your diet is not wise.

When I was on Accutane, I used some sort of Vaseline medicated lip balm. It came in an off-white tube with a blue cap. Although I tried several other products, this worked the best and was also pretty cheap.

i find it better than kiehl's
reapply as necessary

at night, you may want to wet your lips slightly and slather on a thick layer of vaseline - after a couple of nights, your lips should start to improve

I have no experience with Accutane, but I've had some pretty bad lips in the past. I've found that it's not so much what lip balm you use but how often you use it. Just buy a bunch and keep them all over the place so that you've always got one handy. You can find plenty of lip balm reviews here: http://chaptastic.blogspot.com/

DO NOT use anything that says medicated on it including Carmex, Chapstick Medicated etc. that stuff actually dries them out even more.

the one thing that actually worked for me was this stuff called Aquaphor, and you can get it at any Walmart for about $4 a tube. i does come in tubs, but i'm not sure if its the same product. mine is a 1.75 tube Aquaphor 'Healing Ointment. put it on after you've brushed your teeth or after you showered and your lips are moist, and Aquaphor will lock that moisture in.

its actually just glorified petroleum jelly, but what i like about it is there is not scent or taste like vaseline. the tube also makes it a lot more hygenic. the tube will last you 2 years at least.

what also helped was before i went to bed i would wet my lips with warm water, dry em off, and slather a good amount of aquaphor on. waking up in the morning with dry lips sucks, especially when your on accutane.

my dermatologists reccomended it while i was on accutane, and i still use it though i've been off it for a few years bc it works so well.

+1. Before getting into bed. It's the best way. I avoid chapsticks that are petroleum based, only get things with all natural ingredients: Burt's Bees, Dr. Bronner's are both good.

sbbbjm is right that you should avoid anything "medicated". A few winters ago my lips got severely chapped, and the only thing that really helped was pure shea butter (I use the small tins from L'Occitane-en-Provence, and refill them myself from a bigger tin). Interestingly, other products like Kiehl's lip balm #1 helped if I layered them over the shea butter but not when used alone. Shea butter tip: It's hard to spread cold shea butter, but if you store a small tin of it in your pocket, it warms up to a a more manageable consistency.

Wow, old post but w/e. I literally had a cracked lip for 9 months, I finally went to my dermatologist and he perscribed me something. I don't even know what it was called, but it came in a big tube, and was Rx. You might as well, espescailly if you're on acutane. It was just a great thing to have, and I actually need to get some more. If I find out the name I'll let you know.

I'd advise some low strength hydrocortisone cream. Usually, applying it once or twice is enough to deal with even incredibly chapped lips. Many of the ingredients in popular lip balm are actually skin irritants (menthol, camphor etc) I'd avoid them like the plague.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I stopped using any type of chapstick and within a day my lips were much better. My dermatologist then recommended that I try vaseline before looking at any other solutions and, voila, they are now feeling good. Thanks again.
