There's banks in both places, and tourists all over, but Roppongi Hills is home to Goldman and JP Morgan is down the street, so you'll find all the bankers at the Grand Hyatt bar.... and Shinjuku is definitely tourist-y. Probably don't want to fly all the way to Tokyo to hang out with a bunch of drunk white bankers, I think you can do that in most other cities, definitely NY.

Okay, cool. I was leaning towards the Park Hyatt since it seems like such a good value for free, but was kind of unsure as to which was in a better 'hood.

I'm not that concerned with how good the room is, as I don't plan to spend tons of time in it, but nicer is always better. I'm assuming that it will have a better concierge as well.

Well, the Park Hyatt is another level up and would definitely have a better concierge service. It has good morning views of Mt Fuji and as all of Tokyo... but apart from that the Grand Hyatt and Park Hyatt are only 4 stops away from each other on the subway, so the distance or neighborhood thing is moot - everything is pretty close here if you're talking Shinjuku-Shibuya-Roppongi as your main hubs. Those 3 places would cover pretty much any interest people would have, being on styleforum. Do stay at the Park Hyatt for the two days, and then if you like clothes, maybe stay around Shibuya for the rest of your trip as most of the clothes people are into here are located around Shibuya, at least walking distance; if you're coming more for the food, then stay around Roppongi maybe, as it's central and walkable to a ton of great restaurants.

yeah no tips here for anybody, prices include (and sometimes don't include) plenty of fees already. Asian hotel game is hectic, they have 10% for this and that to get applied to your final bill. Sometimes you will go to some izakayas or bars where the potential to not make much money off your tab is higher, and so they will hand you a couple small otoshi dishes and tack $10 or $15 to your bill as a seating fee as well, it is mostly unspoken and just shows up on the check as a custom. Cabs are expensive enough as-is that you can expect near-white glove service.

Keeping this thread going...I'm heading to Tokyo for my 2nd visit at the end of the month. Last time I stayed in the Park hotel Shidome (I think that was the one mentioned at the start of the thread). Very happy with it, good value 4-star rooms and service. However the location is not so convenient for the people I'm seeing.
They've recommended the more expensive New Otani (incidentally my dad's regular choice for years) as being more "central". Anyone got any comments on this or other recommendations? I'm not so bothered about top end as long as it's as good as the Park Shiodome
Thanks!

Park Hyatt Tokyo is great.

Four Seasons Marunouchi is superb, so is Seiyo Ginza

Check out Peninsula Tokyo too. Their website is currently down for some reason..

Whisky Live? Shiodome is out of the way, really not so convenient unless you're on a business trip doing work in Shiodome or Shinbashi.

I have stayed at the New Otani and I like it., it's a throwback to an era I am interested in. I'd probably recommend the Okura though, if you want to stay around Tameike/Akasakamitsuke - the New Otani has that 70's/80's Japanese new money feel, the Okura is pure 60's:

Both are offered around the same price and both are close to each other up in Akasaka.

If you don't want to spend that kind of money, try The B Akasaka about a third of the price of the Otani/Okura. It's a 3 star that always gets favorable reviews, and also around Tameikesanno, though up a hill a ways. The New Otani and Okura are both a little bit of a hump from a train station as well, fwiw.

Thanks for the input guys - New Otani is now booked.

If anyone's around to meet up for a beer or yakitori in Tokyo, I'm there the week starting the 20th.

Not WhiskyLive this time, but there will be plenty of whisky bars visited biggrin.gif
